WSOC: Seawolves Retake First Place with 3-0 Victory over Cal State East Bay

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team moved back to the top of the CCAA table with a key 3-0 win over Cal State East Bay on Sunday.  The Seawolves improved to 7-3 in conference play, overtaking the Pioneers for first place with one game to play.

SSU controlled the game from start to finish, recording their 11th shutout of the season with another stellar defensive performance.  Lexi Zandonella-Arasa put the Seawolves on the board in the 17th with an outstanding strike on a free kick.  She lined up the shot from about 40 yards out and drove the shot just over the keeper and under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead.

Sonoma State was back at it three minutes later with another score.  Renee Ketner ran down a ball on the left side and pushed it past the charging goalie towards the goal line.  Malia Falk followed the play and knocked the ball into the empty net just before a defender could get there.  The goal was Falk's fifth of the season, tying Zandonella-Arasa for the team lead.

The Seawolves defense limited the Pioneers to just two shots in the first half while recording six of their own.  They also wasted no time in the second half before making it 3-0 with a goal just 16 seconds into the period.  Zandonella-Arasa got the opportunity started with a shot from 25 yards out that was stopped by Jordan Smith.  Olivia Aschbrenner ran onto the rebound and put the ball across the front of the net towards the back post.  Alyssa Silva was there to put the pass into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.

Sonoma's defense did the rest, keeping the Pioneers off the board for the rest of the game and allowing just six total shots.  The Seawolves recorded 16 shots for the contest, including ten in the second half.

Emily Masursky made three stops in goal for SSU to record her third straight shutout while in net.  She has yet to concede a goal in 346 minutes of action and has a 4-0 record on the season.

The Seawolves will look to clinch the CCAA regular season title and a first round bye in the CCAA Tournament with a win against San Francisco State on Thursday.
