MSOC: Rohane Nets Game Winner with 17 Seconds Left as Seawolves Topple Cal State San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Sean Rohane headed home a perfect cross from Bryan Rosales with 17 seconds left in regulation as the Sonoma State men's soccer prevailed 3-2 over Cal State San Marcos.  The goal was Rohane's second of the game while and moved the Seawolves to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in CCAA play on the season.

SSU dominated the match early on, taking a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute on a goal by Brian Field.  Rohane started the attack with a pass on the left side to Sebastian Bernal-Santos.  Bernal-Santos turned inside and slid a pass to the center of the box to Field.  From there, Field used some nice footwork to free himself from a defender and shot back across the goal for the score.

Six minutes later the Seawolves were on the board again, this time with Rohane's first goal of the game.  Luis Diaz-Mendoza send a long ball across the pitch to Bernal- Santos who one-touched it back down to a charging Rohane.  Without hesitating, Rohane ran onto the ball and blasted a right footed shot past the goalie and inside the near post.

The Cougars would not go away quietly however, storming back to even the match at 2-2 before halftime.  The home team notched goals in the 33rd and 41st minute to bring the game to a draw at the break.

The Seawolves controlled the pace in the second half, maintaining possession for large parts of the period.  Diaz-Mendoza nearly put the team up by a goal in the opening minutes but his header was turned away on a great diving save by Jesus Mentado.

The game continued on tied at 2-2 when the Cougars drew a penalty kick in the 76th minute.  Alex Jung stepped upped to take it against SSU goalie Reinier ter Riet.  Jung tried to place the PK to his right but ter Riet chose correctly and turned away the shot to keep it match even.

That stop took the game into the final minute when Rohane's heroics put it away.  The Seawolves worked the ball down the right side to the feet of Rosales.  He and Bernal-Santos worked a nice combo with Rosales running onto the pass near the goal line.  He then swung the cross in front of the net where Rohane ran onto it with a header.  The shot banged off the near post and shot across the net into the far side for the clincher.

"What a great win! We have been on the other side of games like that recently so it was great to see this one go our way. I told the guys before the game that I didn't care how they did it but to find a way to pull this one out.  They did just that." – Head Coach Marcus Ziemer

Rohane and Field now each stand at five goals on the season for Sonoma State.  Rohane also notched his team leading 6th assist while Bernal-Santos recorded three assists on the game to bring his total to five.  Ter Riet made three saves in net, including the penalty kick to run his record to 4-1-1 on the season.

"Sean was on a mission today, he just wasn't going to let us lose.  Reinier made that penalty save late to keep us in the game and that was huge.  We started great with a couple nice goals but I have to give San Marcus credit.  They kept on us and got back into the game." - Ziemer

The Seawolves are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they close out their road trip with a match against Cal State San Bernardino at 2:00 pm.

"Our deep and quality bench really paid off today.  It rained this morning and the field was sloppy so being able to give our guys rest really paid off.  We will enjoy this one and then regroup tomorrow to get ready for a tough San Bernardino team on Sunday." - Ziemer
