WBB: Seawolves Surrender Fourth Quarter Lead in Loss to Saint Martin’s

MONMOUTH, Oregon – The Sonoma State women's basketball team led by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter on Friday night but ultimately fell to Saint Martin's 68-63.  The Seawolves controlled the game for the first 35 minutes but the Saints closed on a 27-6 run to take over the game.

SSU's defense was stingy early on, holding SMU to just 2 for 12 shooting in the first quarter.  Offensively, Zane Sheckherd scored the first five points and Aaryn Pickett added four more as the Seawolves led 16-5 after one.

Amanda Luckett and Pickett opened the second with back-to-back buckets and later Taylor Johnson and Pickett knocked down 3-pointers to extend the advantage to 19.  Johnson connected on another triple and Cielo Gonzalez made one of her own as the Seawolves led by as many as 22 in the quarter. SSU took a 39-19 lead into the locker room while outshooting the Saints 47%-26%.

Pickett quickly pushed the margin back to 22 at the start of the third but Saint Martins did a good job chipping away at the deficit for the rest of the third.  The Seawolves took a 15 point lead into the fourth with just 10 minutes of game time left.  The teams traded baskets to start the fourth and Sonoma led 57-41 at the 5:41 mark.  The Saints flipped the game from there, ripping off a 18-2 run over a three minute span to trail by only three.  After a pair of free-throws from Shaun Johnson made it a five-point game, Saint Martins scored the next nine to overtake the Seawolves and close out the win.

The Seawolves were outscored 33-13 in the fourth quarter while the Saints hit five 3-pointers in the period.  Pickett led Sonoma with 13 points and five assists while Luckett tacked on 10 points and six rebounds.

Sonoma is back in action tomorrow when they face host team Western Oregon on the final day of the tournament.
