VB: Seawolves Topple Stanislaus State in Key Conference Match

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball team earned a hard-fought victory on Friday evening, toppling Stanislaus State 3-1.  The win kept the Seawolves in the 6th spot in the CCAA standings and put some space between themselves and the Warriors.

The two teams entered the match with only half a game separating them for the final spot in the CCAA Tournament.  The Seawolves held the slight advantage coming into the match and now sit an 8-6 in conference play with four left to play.  They are now 1.5 games up on Stanislaus State and clinched the tiebreaker with a season sweep of the Warriors.

Sonoma State started slow, trailing for the first half of the opening set and found themselves down 18-10.  From there it was all Seawolves as they used an 8-1 run to pull within one.  Jenn Trephan recorded three straight aces during the run while Emily Eaton added two kills.  After a point from the Warriors, Sonoma closed the set on a 7-1 run to earn the 25-21 win.  Overall, the Seawolves closed the set with 15 of the final 18 points.

Stanislaus State opened the second set with nine unanswered points and cruised to a 25-15 win to even the match at 1-1.  The Seawolves would the next one with a dominant third set that saw SSU rip off runs of seven, five and four.  Sonoma State broke a 2-2 tie with a 14-4 run to break the set open and never looked back.  Kiana Richardson was unstoppable in the third, racking up eight kills on her own.

The Seawolves closed out the match with another come-from-behind win, refusing to quit and breaking two straight set points to win 26-24.  After erasing a 16-12 deficit the Seawolves still found themselves down late in the set, trailing 24-22.  Amy Trephan earned a huge sideout with a kill and an error by the Warriors made it 24-24.  Brynna Slayton delivered an ace on the next serve and another error by Stanislaus sealed the match for Sonoma.

The Seawolves finished with 45 kills, one less than the Warriors but held big advantages in aces (13-8) and blocks (9-3).  Richardson led all players with 15 kills while Amy Trephan and Eaton added 12 and 10 kills respectively.  Jenn Trephan tacked on a match high 30 assists and 5 aces and a team best 16 digs.

Sonoma returns to the court again tomorrow for another CCAA showdown with Chico State.  The match is set to start at 5:00 pm at Chico and can be viewed at www.ccaanetwork.com.
