WBB: Seawolves Outlast Humboldt State to Close 2021 with a Win

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team used a smothering defense and timely scoring to close 2021 with a 54-50 victory over Humboldt State.  The Seawolves limited the Lumberjacks to just 31 points in the final 30 minutes of play to improve their CCAA record to 2-3.

Sonoma found themselves down early as HSU jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first six minutes of action.  Jayme Blackard and Taylor Johnson scored the next five points but the Jacks still led 17-10 with just over two minutes remaining in the first.  Cielo Gonzalez then took over, scoring six points in the final 65 seconds to send the game to the second with Humboldt leading 19-16.

The game turned in the second with the Seawolves defense taking over.  Sonoma allowed just two points in the first seven minutes of the second while taking their first lead at halfway points on a layup by Zane Sheckherd.  After Humboldt retook the lead in the closing minutes of the half Gonzalez and Blackard closed the half with back-to-back buckets to give the Seawolves a 29-27 lead at halftime.

Gonzalez and Blackard were back at it again in the third scoring the first seven points and helping Sonoma extend their lead to as many as nine in the period. Later in the quarter Shauna Jackson delivered back-to-back baskets to give SSU a 44-36 lead heading to the fourth.

The Jacks cut the margin to four in the opening minutes of the fourth but Blackard answered with a basket.  A few minutes later Sheckherd converted a layup plus a free-throw to make it a seven-point game.  Humboldt State would not go away, scoring the next six points and pulling to within one with 55 ticks remaining.

The Seawolves would then rely on their defense and free-throw shooting to seal the game.  Gonzalez made one from the stripe followed by a defensive stop and two freebies from Sheckherd.  After another defensive stand Sheckherd knocked down another free-throw to push the margin to five.  The Jacks would make it a 3-point game in the final seconds but Sheckherd iced the game with one last freebie.

Gonzalez led all players with a career high 18 points while Blackard also set a new career best with 16 points of her own.  Sheckherd tacked nine points and grabbed a game high 16 rebounds.  The Seawolves limited HSU to just 29% shooting from the field and 3 for 29 from 3-point range.

Sonoma State is off for the rest of 2021 but will return for a rematch with Humboldt State on January 2nd in Arcata.
