ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Thursday September 2nd, the Sonoma State men's soccer team opened up their 2021 regular season play with a matchup against GNAC member Seattle Pacific University. The Seawolves have had yearly battles with the Falcons including a double overtime draw in their last matchup during the 2019 fall season. After 90-minutes of action the Seawolves comeback would fall short as they would drop the home opener 2-1 to Seattle Pacific.
Six players made their Seawolf debut today as veterans
Sebastian Bernal-Santos,
Sean Rohane,
Brian Field, and
Derik Engebretsen helped lead the young and dynamic 2021 squad. The Seawolves young back line was tested early as Alex Mejia scored the opening goal just three minutes into the match for SPU. The Seawolves did gain their composure however, and were able to outshoot SPU 6-4 after the first 45 minutes of action.
Sebastian Bernal-Santos would go on to lead both teams with four total shots, all four on goal, in the game.
The second half would bring a similar feeling as Alex Mejia would net another early goal for SPU in the 50th minute to extend their lead 2-0. The goal only seemed to spark the Seawolves as their pressure and intensity would increase causing mistakes in the back line for SPU and more shots on goal throughout the half. Wave after wave of pressure would eventually break Seattle Pacific's back line as
Matt Lee got into the action and was able to draw a penalty kick in the 56th minute. Captain
Sean Rohane would step up to the spot and net the penalty just past the fingertips of SPU's keeper.
It was game on for the Seawolves. Down just a goal with a little over 30 minutes to play made for an exciting finish in SSU's home opener. SPU's keeper Lars Helleren would come up huge for the Falcons time and time again. Helleren finished the game with 9 saves including key saves on shots from
Sebastian Bernal-Santos,
Matt Lee, and freshman
Evan Sadler. Sadler would come off the bench for the Seawolves and provide a much needed spark offensively as he tallied 3 shots and 2 on goal in his debut.
Despite outshooting Seattle Pacific 13-6, the Seawolves would drop the home opening match 2-1. SSU returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 4th where they face off against Western Washington University as they look to split their first two regular season matches. Click
