MSOC: Seawolves Drop Non-Conference Tilt with Dominican

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Sonoma State men's team racked up a decisive shot advantage but came away empty handed in a 2-0 loss to Dominican on Wednesday afternoon.  The Seawolves outshot the Penguins 18-11 but ultimately fell to 2-3 on the season with the loss.

Dominican jumped out to an early lead with a goal in the 6th minute off the foot of Roberto Garcia.  A couple minutes later, Luis Diaz-Mendoza nearly knotted the game but hit shot hit off the post.  The rest of the first half was played to a standstill with the Penguins holding a 7-5 shot advantage for the first 45 minutes.

Sonoma State came out gunning in the second half, controlling the ball and the pace for most of the period.  The Seawolves consistently put pressure on the Penguins defense but could not slip one into the net.  Their best chances came in the first 25 minutes, including another shot off the woodwork, this time by Sebastian Bernal-Santos

In the 77th minute, Dominican added a much-needed insurance goal to put the game away.  A cross into the box fell at the feet of Edgard Morazan who dribbled it into the empty net for a 2-0 advantage.

SSU racked up 13 second half shots, including four on target.  Derik Engebretsen made two stops in net for the Seawolves while Ruben Raygoza earned the shutout with six saves for Dominican.

Sonoma State returns home on Saturday for a non-conference game against San Francisco State at 12:30 pm.
