WSOC: #14 Ranked Seawolves Net Two In Win Over APU

AZUSA, CALIF. - On September 22nd the Sonoma State women's soccer team traveled to LA for a showdown with PacWest opponent Azusa Pacific. Coming in to today's match, the Cougars had a 5-1 record and were on a 4-game win streak. That win streak also came against four CCAA schools including a 3-2 win over Cal Poly Pomona and a 1-0 win last week against Cal State LA. The 14th ranked Seawolves would have a tough test after coming off of a heartbreaking road defeat against nationally ranked Western Washington but were poised to get back in the win column under the lights in LA.

Head coach Emria Salzmann had her group dialed in today as the Seawolves out-shot the Cougars 12-6 in the match and came away with the 2-0 victory. Freshman midfielder Lexi Zandonella-Arasa started the scoring with an 18th minute goal to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead. That would go down as Arasa's first goal as a Seawolf. Arasa has been an integral part of SSU's offense and midfield stability as she has started in four of the teams five games and now has one goal and one assist on the year.

Sonoma State would net their second goal a little over 15 minutes into the second half to help put the game out of reach. Junior Alyssa Silva would record her first goal of the season on an assist from freshman defender Julia Betti. Silva sits with a goal and an assist on the season as the Seawolves would finalize their 2-0 lead and come away with the non-conference victory.

The win would prove huge for SSU and the entire CCAA as Azusa had recorded four win's against fellow CCAA schools coming into the match. The Seawolves improve to 4-1 on the year with key wins over Azusa Pacific and Western Oregon. Salzmann and her group return home this week for their final non-conference match of the preseason against conference bay area rival SF State. Despite both teams belonging to the CCAA, the game will go down as a non-conference match and not count towards conference standings.
