ROHNERT Park, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball team turned in a dominating performance on Friday night with a three-set sweep of Chico State. The Seawolves won 25-21, 25-21, 25-21 to move to 2-1 in CCAA action and 5-6 overall.
The first set started in favor of SSU as they jumped out to an early 6-3 lead on two kills from
Kiana Richardson and three attacking errors by the Wildcats. Chico State responded to take the lead and extend it to as many as five at 15-10. Sonoma answered right back with seven straight points, three of which came on consecutive aces by
Jenn Trephan. The visitors would come back once again and tie the score at 20-20 before the Seawolves closed it out with a 5-1 run.
Sonoma State kept the momentum going in the second set, starting with an 8-3 run on two kills each from Richardson and
Amy Trephan. The Seawolves kept the lead until the Wildcats knotted the game at 16-16. However, SSU took over from there, tallying the next two points and never trailing again.
Emily Eaton recorded a pair of kills and Richardson ended the set with a big kill of her own.
The Seawolves left no doubt in the third and final set, leading wire-to-wire and picking up the sweep. Sonoma used a six point run in the middle of set to break the game open and closed it out on a kill by
Leilani Hallman.
SSU held advantages in every category, leading 37-30 in kills, 9-5 in blocks and 7-4 in aces. They recorded a match best 17 kills in the second set while hitting .269 in the third.
Richardson finished with a match high 10 kills while
Amy Trephan added nine.
Jenn Trephan tacked on five kills, 28 assists and four aces.
The Seawolves are back in action tomorrow night when they host Stanislaus State at 7:00 pm.
