ROHNERT PARK, Calif. –
Brian Field scored a pair of first half goals as the Sonoma State men's soccer stormed past Fresno Pacific 4-1. The Seawolves closed out their 2021 non-conference with schedule with a dominating performance to head into CCAA play with a 4-3 record.
Both teams eased into the game with only one shot in the first ten minutes. In the 12
th minute the Seawolves broke thru with Field notching his first goal of the game.
Sean Rohane sent a long ball into the box that was sent back across the mouth of the goal by
Luis Diaz-Mendoza where Field finished off the score.
Sonoma State earned a penalty kick in the 21
st minute when
Sebastian Bernal-Santos was taken out by the FPU goalie. Diaz-Mendoza stepped up to take the PK but Hunter Johnson made a diving stop to keep the score 1-0. Less than two minutes later however, the Seawolves got back on the board with another goal by Field. This time, Rohane sent another long ball over the defensive that Field ran onto and slipped it past the charging keeper.
After a scoreless final 20 minutes of the first, FPU cut the deficit in half five minutes into the second with a goal by Angel Ruelas. The Sonoma defense buckled down after that score while the offense picked back up the pressure. In the 67
th minute
Timmy Phillips put the Seawolves back up by two. Bernal-Santos sent a cross from the left side to the top of the box where Phillips was waiting with a one-touch shot to the back post.
Mateo Pasqua would go on to add another goal in the 85
th to make the final 4-1. Pasqua's goal came off a cross from
Evan Sadler.
That was a great win today! Fresno Pacific is a very good program and they play great football. Our defense was outstanding today, Jason Hernandez had his best game of the season. Lucas English and Miles Hodgson were also excellent back there." - Head Coach Marcus Ziemer
SSU controlled the game from start to finish with a 16-9 shot advantage. The Seawolves put nine shots on goal while limiting the Sunbirds to just three. Reinier Ter Riet earned his second straight victory in net with a pair of saves.
"Brian Field was very dangerous up top and made the most of his chances today. Timmy's goal was world class and Mateo finished off the game with another great goal. Their keeper made a couple of other saves that easily could have given us more." - Ziemer
Field's two goals upped his team leading total on the season to four while Rohane notched his fourth and fifth assists.
"We will take the day off tomorrow and then get ready for CCAA play against two of the top teams in the conference. I jave been saying all season we can play with anyone and we will see where stand after the weekend." - Ziemer
The Seawolves open CCAA play on Friday when they host Cal Poly Pomona at 3:00 pm at Seawolf Soccer Field.
