WBB: Seawolves Continue Winning Ways, Topple Cal State San Bernardino

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team stayed hot, winning for the fourth time in their last five with a 64-57 victory over Cal State San Bernardino.  The Seawolves, despite suiting up just eight players outlasted the Coyotes to improve to 5-3 in CCAA play.

For the second time this week SSU led for nearly the entire game, trailing for the last time at 4-2. After the Coyotes scored to take the 4-2 advantage the teams traded baskets for the next six minutes with the Seawolves holding a 10-9 lead with 2:02 remaining.  Amanda Luckett scored on the next possession and Kianna Maldia closed the quarter with a 3-pointer to make it 16-9 after one.

Sonoma State caught fire in the second to push their margin to as many as 17.  Alli McDonald bookended a Chasity Spady triple with a pair of threes of her own to cap off a 9-0 run.  After a spurt by the Coyotes got the lead down to single digits Luckett and Aaryn Pickett closed the half with a layup and 3-pointer respectively to send the game to halftime at 34-20.

CSUSB regrouped in the second half and made their run in the third quarter to get back into the game.  The Seawolves struggled from the field in the period as they saw their lead drop to just three points.  Luckett hit a pair of freebies the close the third to make it a five-point contest.

The Seawolves saw their lead once again dwindle to three at the start of the fourth but Luckett once again delivered a key basket.  Spady followed with another triple to push the margin back to eight.  Luckett later would add a jumper and pair of free-throws to provide a little breathing room but the Coyotes would not go away with a fight.  With a basket at the one-minute mark they once again made it a one possession game.  However, the Seawolves proved to be clutch at the charity stripe, icing the game by making eight straight free-throws in the final minute.  Cielo Gonzalez made all six of her attempts to seal the victory.

Luckett led all players in the game with 17 points off the bench in just 18 minutes.  Gonzalez finished with her first career double-double, scoring 12 points and adding ten rebounds, three assists and three steals.  She also went 10 for 10 from the free-throw-line.

The Seawolves return to the road next week for games against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State East Bay.  Follow www.sonomaseawolves.com for links to the live stream.
