ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball capped off an amazing week with their second win over a ranked opponent in three days. The Seawolves defeated No. 14 ranked Cal State San Bernardino in four sets, recording a season best 68 kills. SSU moved to 18-6 overall and 11-5 in CCAA play with the victory.
The Seawolves were on their game from the start, using an early 8-0 first set run to take a 10-4 advantage.
Kiana Richardson delivered a kill and two aces during the run with
Jen Trephan adding two kills of her own. Despite the early lead the Coyotes tied the set at 17-17 before
Jaden Krist took over for Sonoma State. Krist recorded the next two kills and a huge solo block to make it 20-17.
Jessie Hobbs notched the next point and after CSUSB took the next the Seawolves ripped off four straight to win 25-18.
Cal State San Bernardino rebounded in the second set, breaking a 13-13 tie and leading the rest of the way to even the score 25-20.
The third set was all SSU as they used two kills from
Leilani Hallman and an ace from Richardson to lead 5-2 and never looks back. The Seawolves later used a four-point run to give themselves some breathing room before closing with a 6-1 run to seal the 25-16 win. Hobbs registered three straight kills to turn a 19-15 advantage into a 22-15 lead. Middles Hobbs and Hallman finished the third with four kills apiece.
The Seawolves shut the door in fourth after a tight set to start. With the score 7-7 Sonoma State ripped off an 11-3 run to put the game out of reach. Krist recorded three straight kills and Hobbs later added two as the lead grew to as many as many as 11. Krist and Richardson then ended the match with the final two kills as the pair combined for eight kills in the set.
Sonoma State finished with 68 kills, the fifth highest total in the CCAA this season while hitting .318 for the match. The Coyotes meanwhile recorded 38 kills and hit just above .200.
Richardson led four players in double figures for the Seawolves with 15 kills and added three aces. Hallman and Krist registered 14 kills apiece with Hallman hitting .500 and Krist coming in at .387. Trephan just missed a triple-double with 9 kills, 31 assists and 18 digs. Hobbs closed out her Senior Day with 10 kills and four blocks.
The Seawolves moved into a tie for 4
th place and take on Cal State East Bay on Thursday with that spot on the line. They will then close out their regular season by traveling south to take on Cal State San Marcos.
