ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball continued their torrid play on Thursday with their fourth consecutive sweep in a dominant victory over Cal Poly Humboldt. The Seawolves attack was unstoppable, finishing with a season best .457 hitting percentage with 50 kills and just eight errors.
SSU wasted little time jumping out on the Lumberjacks, scoring the first seven points of the contest.
Brynna Slayton picked up two early aces and the Seawolves ripped off three straight kills for the early advantage. Sonoma State would go on to lead by as many as nine several times throughout the set and eventually took a 1-0 lead with a 25-16 victory. The Seawolves racked up 17 kills and just one error while hitting well over .500 for the set.
The Sonoma State attack was nearly as deadly in the second set with 16 more kills and a .409 hitting percentage. The set was tied at 13-13 before the Seawolves rallied with an 8-1 run to break it open and take the second 25-17.
Jessie Hobbs led the way with six kills on just seven tries, including the last three kills of the set.
Jen Trephan added five kills in the set.
The third set was tighter throughout but the Seawolves proved to be too much with a 25-20 win to seal the sweep. Once again Sonoma State registered 17 kills with
Leilani Hallman pacing the squad with five kills. Hobbs and
Kiana Richardson added four kills apiece in the third to help SSU run away with it.
Hobbs had a career night for the Seawolves with 13 kills on just 15 attempts with zero errors and an .857 hitting percentage. Trephan tacked on 12 kills, 20 assists, six digs and four blocks. Hallman added nine kills and a .667 hitting percentage with Slayton leading all players with four aces.
The Seawolves and Lumberjacks square off again on Saturday for a rematch in Arcata at 5:00 pm.
