VB: Seawolves Fall in Thrilling CCAA Championship Match

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball nearly pulled off a comeback for the ages, falling in five sets to Cal Poly Pomona in the CCAA Championship match.  The Seawolves fell behind 2-0 but rallied back to force a fifth set before the Broncos pulled out a 15-10 win.

Sonoma State found themselves in a hole early as CPP used a big first set run to jump put to an 18-7 lead as they cruised to a 25-16 opening set win.  The Broncos continued their hot play in the second, storming out to a 12-7 advantage and holding off several Seawolves runs.  SSU pulled within one after a 5-1 spurt but could not get any closer, finding themselves down 2-0 after a 25-20 defeat.

The Seawolves would not go down without a fight, taking on the challenge of overcoming a deficit for the second day in a row.  They would come out strong in the third using a barrage of kills to take a 15-5 lead.  Kiana Richardson recorded the first two points with kills and Jaden Krist later scored points on four straight.  Sonoma State would extend their advantage to as many as 12 with Krist and Richardson continuing to dominate on the attack.  Both finished the set with six kills apiece as the Seawolves finished the third with an 18-8 kill advantage.

Sonoma State picked up where they left off to open the fourth, leading 10-6 and then 12-8.  The Broncos scored the next three to pull within one but the Seawolves responded to lead 17-13.  That would not last long as CPP notched the next four to tie the score at 17-17.  Krist scored the next two points on a kill and an ace but the Broncos fought back once again to even it at 21 apiece.  The Seawolves put it away from there, scoring the next four points with two coming on kills from Richardson and another on an ace by Brynna Slayton

The match moved to the deciding set to determine the CCAA Tournament Champion.  The fifth was back and forth from the start with the score being tied at every point from 3 thru 9.  With the score 9-9 the Broncos recorded the next two to give themselves some breather room.  After the Seawolves cut the deficit in half at 11-10, CPP scored the next four to seal the title.

Sonoma State led the match with 60 kills and also had 12 blocks compared to 50 and 6 respectively for the Broncos.  Richardson registered a career high 21 kills on the match to lead all players while Krist followed up her 18 kill semifinal performance with 17 more in the final.  Jen Trephan finished with 7 kills, 26 assists, 15 digs and four blocks.

Richardson, Krist and Trephan all earned CCAA All-Tournament Team honors for their performances and leading the Seawolves to the title game for the second time in school history.

Sonoma State will now wait for Sunday's Selection Show to see if they earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament.  The Seawolves were ranked 7th in the last West Region Poll with the top-8 teams advancing to the tournament.
