WBB: Seawolves Win Thriller over Cal State Dominguez Hills

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – With the Sonoma State women's basketball team trailing by one with under 20 second remaining Zane Sheckherd drained the go-ahead 3-pointer as the Seawolves outlasted Cal State Dominguez Hills 69-65.  Sheckherd's triple, followed by her layup with six ticks left sealed the game for SSU and kept them in the thick of the CCAA Tournament race.

The game was back-and-forth from the start with 12 lead changes, including several in the first quarter alone. Taylor Johnson opened the game hot, hitting her first two threes as the Seawolves jumped out to a 6-2 lead.  The Toros responded and took a three point advantage at 14-11 in the final minutes of the first.  Sonoma State would then rip off seven straight points on baskets by Alli McDonald and Jayme Blackard and a 3-pointer by Cielo Gonzalez

After a brief lead by CSUDH to open the second the Seawolves took over the quarter and led nearly the entire way.  They would use another 7-0 run, this time capped off by a Gonzalez basket plus the foul to lead by six and would later stretch the lead to seven.  Camille Johnson would net the final two buckets of the half as Sonoma took a 34-28 lead into the break.

Sheckherd opened the third with a jumper but the Toros followed with a 10-2 run to tie the game at 38-38.  From there, the two teams would trade leads several times, including twice in the final minute of the third.  Gonzalez hit a tough layup with 32 seconds left to put SSU ahead by one but Danyell Booker answered with one of her own to send the game to the fourth with the visitors leading 45-44.

The opening minutes of the fourth tilted towards the Toros as they lead by as many as five with seven minutes remaining in the game.  Sheckherd then knocked down a big triple and Aaryn Pickett followed with one of her own to give the Seawolves the lead back at 54-53.  Sheckherd would later add a layup to stretch the lead to five with 3:10 remaining.

The closing minutes of the game featured a ton of action with both teams hitting big shots.  After Dominguez pulled within two, McDonald converted a layup to push it back to four with 1:30 left.  The Toros would then score the next five, including a 3-pointer by Auren Isaacson with 48 seconds remaining to put them ahead 65-64.

On the ensuing possession with the shot clock winding down McDonald found Sheckherd open behind the 3-point line.  Sheckherd's shot hit the front rim, bounced off the glass and found the bottom of the net to put the Seawolves back on top.  McDonald then came up big on the defensive end, blocking the game-tying layup which would lead to a breakaway basket by Sheckherd to seal the victory.

Sonoma State scored 25 points in the fourth quarter comeback, including 13 from Sheckherd.  She finished with a game high 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting and added eight rebounds.  McDonald added 13 points and three blocks while Gonzalez also reached double figures with 10.

The Seawolves now sit in seventh place in the conference, just one game back of the six spot.  The top six teams advance to the CCAA Tournament at the beginning of March at Humboldt State.  SSU is back in action next week with a road trip to Southern California to take on Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino.
