MBB: Seawolves Drop a Pair on the Road, Look to Regroup for Senior Weekend

POMONA, CALIF. - On Saturday, February 19th, the Sonoma State men's basketball team fell to CCAA opponent Cal Poly Pomona 77-63. After pulling off the thrilling overtime win over the Broncos back in January, Pomona would even up the season series with a win over the Seawolves Saturday night. A 12-3 run to open up the game would give Pomona control in the early minutes. After being down by as many as 16 near the five minute mark, the Seawolves would flip a switch and go on an 11-2 run to end the half and make it just a 7 point game. Several players contributed to the scoring run including Damian Wallace, Wesley Gilbert, and Jaylen Wells

A Damian Wallce layup and a Jacob Williams three pointer early in the second half would pull SSU all the way to within four. However, a near 70% shooting percentage in the second half for the Broncos would be the decider as SSU would go on to fall 77-63. 21 points off of the Seawolves 19 turnovers also proved costly in the Broncos win.

Head coach Rich Shayewitz and his group never led during the contest but were able to shoot nearly 50% from the field in the second half and put up 11 more points as well. Some surprise performers helped lead the way for SSU on the night as Santa Rosa transfer Damian Wallace and veteran sharp shooter Jacob Williams each finished in double figures. Wallace led the way with 12 points on 4-7 shooting. His 12 points would be his second highest mark on the season. He also went 2-3 from beyond the arc, good for a season high. Williams found his stroke from beyond the arc hitting some big three's throughout the game. He shot 3-6 from deep, good for a team high, and finished with 11 points. Freshman Jaylen Wells chipped in another double digit performance with 10 points in his 33 minutes of action.

Once again Kenny Olsem came off the bench and put up some quality numbers. Despite shooting 2-9 from the field, Olsem was able to attack the paint and get to the free throw line to finish 7-8 from the stripe. Olsem also chipped in four rebounds in his 24 minutes off the bench.

Sonoma State falls to 3-23 on the season and 3-17 in CCAA play. The Seawolves will return to the Wolves' Den for their final two games of the season including senior day on Saturday against Cal State LA. Thursday, February 24th SSU will host Cal State San Marcos at 7:30 PM. Live stats and stream links can be found at sonomaseawolves.com and all games can be streamed on the CCAA Network.
