SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team took the second game of a doubleheader with Dominican 9-0 to earn the split with the Penguins on Monday afternoon. The Seawolves could not overcome an early deficit in a 6-2 loss in the opener but used a four-hit shutout from Jesse Dupuis in the nightcap to move to 9-6 on the season.
SSU and Dominican played through two scoreless innings to open the day before the Penguins put up four runs in the third inning. The home team scored the first on a double steal before a bases clearing double scored all three runners to push the lead to 4-0.
Nichole Sarra was charged the first run of the inning for Sonoma after getting the start and going 2.1 innings.
Bailee Reed came on in relief for the Seawolves and finished off the inning.
The Penguins added another run in the fourth before the Seawolves broke through for the first time in the top of fifth.
Amari Houston reach after being hit by a pitch with two outs and promptly stole second base.
Rylee Nishimoto was also hit to give SSU two base runners. They would then pull off a double steal and eventually come into score on an error by Dominican. That would be as close as SSU would get however as the Penguins added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Jordyn Martinez had two of the three hits for the Seawolves, one of which was a double. Sarra received the loss while Reed finished the contest with 3.2 innings of work, allowing two earned runs.
The second game was a different story from the start as Sonoma opened the contest with a four run first inning.
Cassidy Romano started things off with a double and then stole third before Martinez walked and stole second.
Giana Hays followed with an RBI single and stole second to put two runners in scoring position.
Courtney Jack plated the next run with a single and
Lauren Mirtoni followed with a squeeze bunt to score the third.
Skylar Linnane drove in the final run with a groundout as the Seawolves ended the inning with four runs, three hits and four stolen bases.
SSU added another run in the third inning with Hays reaching on a single and stealing second. She would later score on an error by the Penguins to make it 5-0. In the top of the fourth, Romano ripped a triple and would score on the play after an errant throw.
The Seawolves were far from done, tacking on another in the fifth inning with Hays and Mirtoni back at it again. Hays singled and stole second before coming into score with an RBI single by Mirtoni. After a scoreless sixth, Mirtoni put the game away in the seventh with her first homerun of the season. Hays led off with a single once again, her fourth of the game and stole second base, also her fourth. Mirtoni then drilled the ball over the left field fence for a 9-0 lead.
Jesse Dupuis was untouchable for the Seawolves in the circle on the day, going the distance and earning the complete game shutout. She allowed just four hits and struck out six to earn her fourth win of the season.
Hays finished the game with a career high four hits, four runs and four steals to help the Seawolves to eight stolen bases in the game. Mirtoni added two hits and four RBIs while Romano and
Reagan Hunt also tacked on two hits apiece.
The Seawolves return to CCAA play on Friday when they head south to take on Cal State San Marcos for a pair of doubleheaders. Live Stats and video available through the links at
