MBB: Seawolves Fall to SF State Despite 43-Point Second Half

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. - On Thursday, February 3rd the Sonoma State men's basketball team fell in CCAA play to the Gators of SF State. A slow start would prove to be the death of Seawolves as they were only able to record 16 first half points. Despite the lack of shooting early on, head coach Rich Shayewitz and his group would finish with 43 second half points and outscore the Gators by 10, but that wouldn't prove enough to climb back into the game as SF would finish the game on top 73-59. The Seawolves offense has hit new highs in recent weeks after a slow start to the season. They were able to scratch and claw with conference rival and the 13th ranked team in the nation in Chico State last Saturday and even hold a five point lead at the half in that contest. Three players would finish the game in double figures for SSU.

A staggering 20% from the field and going just 3-15 from three point range would accumulate to just 16 first half points for Sonoma State. On the flip side, SF State just seemed to hit everything as the Gators made over half their shots and connected on 7 three balls to extend their early lead. A 29-6 run to start the game would shock the Seawolves as there seemed to be no means of stopping the streaking Gators offense. Jaylen Wells was one of the lone scorers for SSU as he finished with 11 of the team's 16 points in the first half.

Nick Klarman and Simon Ramirez would each hit double figures in the second half as they finished the game with 10 points a piece. Jackie Luong would connect on two three's in the game to give him 6 points off the bench for the Seawolves. Shayewitz and his group would look like a completely different team in that second half as they were able to turn it around and more than double their shooting percentage. SSU went 15-25 from the field for a staggering 60% from the field and even saw the ball go down from beyond the arc. The team went 6-10 from three in the second half with the help of multiple players. Despite the Seawolves out-scoring the Gators 43-33 in the second half, the deficit was simply too great to overcome with only a 16 point effort in the first half.

After scoring just two points and not recording a single made field goal in his previous game against Chico State, freshman forward Jaylen Wells bounced back nicely with a solid 16 points on 6-10 shooting to lead his team. He would also add 8 rebounds and 2 assists to his stat line.

Sonoma State falls to 3-18 on the season and 3-12 in CCAA play. The Seawolves will remain on the road and take on Monterey Bay on Saturday at 3 PM.
