SB: Seawolves Sweep Cal Poly Humboldt in Twin Bill

ARCATA, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team used a pair of long balls and some stellar pitching to earn a sweep of Cal Poly Humboldt on Sunday afternoon.  The two wins give the Seawolves five wins in their last six contests and move them to 16-13 on the season.

SSU wasted little time getting going in the opening game, scoring runs in the first, second and third to lead 9-0.  In the first the Seawolves put two on the board using two walks and an error on the Lumberjacks.  Rylee Nishimoto walked and scored when Jordyn Martinez reached on an error by the right fielder.  Martinez would later score on a groundout by Skylar Linnane

The offense was back at it in the second with Giana Hays leading off with a double and coming around to score on a double by Reagan Hunt.  Hunt later scored when Nishimoto reached on an error and Martinez followed with a big homerun to right center to make it 6-0 after two.

Linnane and Courtney Jack opened the third with back-to-back doubles to plate another run and Anna Zoia-Buescher singled home the game's eighth run.  Zoia-Buesche and Hays pulled off a double steal later in the inning with Hays taking home to push the margin up to 9-0.

Camille Rodriguez and Bailee Reed did the rest for the Seawolves on the rubber combining for five innings of one run ball.  Rodriguez started the game with two scoreless innings and got one out in the third before being replaced by Reed.  Reed got the final two outs of the inning with only one scoring and then hurled two scoreless frames to earn her first win of the season.

Sonoma State rounded out the scoring in the top of the fifth with an RBI double by Zoia-Buescher to score Hays.  Zoia-Buescher led the Seawolves with two hits and two RBIs while Martinez hit her second homerun of the season.  Hays scored a game high three runs and added a steal.

The Seawolves continued their hot play in the nightcap behind complete game gem from Jesse Dupuis.  Dupuis surrendered a run in the opening inning before shutting out the Lumberjacks for the final six innings.  She allowed just two hits over the final six frames while striking out two.

Sonoma State rebounded from the early deficit to score three runs in the top of the second and take the lead for good.  Hays started the rally with a single and moved to third when Lauren Mirtoni reached on an error.  Hunt followed with a three-run blast to left field, her first homerun of the season to put the Seawolves up 3-1.

Mirtoni added to the lead in the fourth inning with a double down the line to score Jack who reached earlier on a single.  Martinez executed a squeeze play in the top of the fifth with a bunt that scored Zoia-Buescher.  Martinez also plated the games final's run with a double in the seventh to make the final score 6-1.

Buescher led the team once again with two hits and two runs while Hunt drove in three on her homer.  Dupuis improved to 7-1 on the season with her second straight complete game victory.

The Seawolves and Lumberjacks close out the series tomorrow with another doubleheader starting at 11:00 am.  Live stream is available at ccaanetwork.com.
