SB: Seawolves Stay Hot, Sweep Cal State San Bernardino

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team upped their winning streak to six with a pair of victories over Cal State San Bernardino.  The Seawolves took the first game 3-0 and held on in the nightcap 5-4 to improve to 20-13 on the season.

Camille Rodriguez continued her dominance on the rubber, hurling a complete game four-hit shutout in the series opener on Friday afternoon.  Rodriguez picked up her fourth straight win and has now allowed just five runs in her last 24 innings of work.

Offensively the Seawolves did all of their damage in the third inning off Coyotes starter Brooklyn Blackmon.  Lauren Mirtoni led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rylee NishimotoAnna Zoia-Buescher followed with the big hit, a two-run home run to right field to plate the game's first two runs.  Cassidy Romano continued the inning with a triple to right center, her seventh of the season, and came into score on a squeeze bunt by Jordyn Martinez

Rodriguez did the rest from there, pitching her way out of a jam in the fourth inning with an inning ending flyout with two runners on.  In the seventh, CSUSB loaded the bases but Rodriguez once again got the big out, this time ending the game.  She finished with six strikeouts for the game and allowed just four singles while earning her ninth win of the season.

Mirtoni finished the game with three hits to lead all players while Zoia-Buescher had two RBIs with her second homerun of the season.

In the second game of the doubleheader the Seawolves once again jumped out to an early lead with some clutch hitting.  Bailee Reed got the start and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning.

Sonoma State got on the board first with a run in the second inning.  Courtney Jack led off with single before Natasha Ochoa came into pinch run.  Skylar Linnane then laid down a sacrifice bunt that allowed Ochoa to round second and head towards an uncovered third base.  The Coyotes first baseman made a throw to third to try and catch Ochoa but the ball sailed into the outfield and allowed her to come in and score.

The Seawolves added to the lead in the third as Nishimoto got things started with a double down the line.  Zoia-Buescher followed with a single to make it 2-0 and eventually found her way to third base.  She would later score on a sacrifice fly by Martinez and the inning continued with a double by Giana Hays.  One batter later Hays would score on a single by Jack through the right side and the game moved to fourth at 4-0.

Zoia-Buescher continued her hot streak in the fourth inning with a triple to deep right center to score Nishimoto who reached on a single earlier.  In the top of the fifth the Coyotes finally got to Reed who entered the inning with a no-hitter.  Three of the first four batters of the inning singled to load the bases.  Reed then walked Kelia Paragus to give CSUSB their first run of the game.  The next batter singled and the following walked to make it 5-3.  Jesse Dupuis came on in relief and after hitting the next batter to make it a one-run game she got two straight outs to end the threat.

Dupuis closed the door from there to earn her first save of the season.  She retired the Coyotes in order in the sixth and overcame two errors in the seventh to get the final two flyouts to end the contest.  Dupuis finished the game with 2.2 innings of work and did not allow a hit or a walk.

Nishimoto led all players with three hits and two runs while Zoia-Buescher finished with two hits and two RBIs.  Jack also recorded two hits and drove in one.

The Seawolves have now won nine of their last ten games and sit in sole possession of fourth place in the CCAA with a 12-10 conference record.  They will host Cal State San Bernardino again tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 11:00 am.
