BSB: Seawolves Win 4th Straight in 16-Run Rout over Cal State LA

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Friday, April 22nd, the Sonoma State baseball team kept the train rolling as they won their 4th straight game, their longest win streak of the season, in a decisive 16-2 victory over the Golden Eagles of Cal State LA. Junior right hander Nick Roth would stick it out for 7 strong innings and get his second win of the season, improving his ERA to just over three on the year. SSU would remain hot offensively after scoring a whopping 52 runs in their series victory over Cal State San Marcos the weekend prior and put up 16 runs on 13 hits in the contest.

2ND & 3RD INNING:

Despite giving up 9 hits in his outing, Roth would induce several ground ball outs and two double plays turned by Nick Simmons and Joshua Medina to get out of some tough jams and limit the damage from the Golden Eagles. After giving up a run in the first, SSU would bounce back and tie the game up in the second with a 2-out RBI single to left field from senior Nick Simmons. Simmons has started to turn things around at the plate as he has recorded a hit in each of his last four games.

In the third inning, outfielder Torreahno Sweet would rip a single to center to score catcher Lucas Townsend who led the inning off with a solid single up the middle. Townsend brings his average up to .250 as he has had back-to-back multi-hit games. Sweet has also gotten out of a tough slump as he finished the game with three hits and recorded his third straight multi-hit game dating back to the San Marcos series last weekend. Roth would retire the Golden Eagles in order in the 4th and record back-to-back scoreless innings as SSU held on to a 2-1 lead after four.

4TH INNING:

The game would flip on its head in the bottom of the 4th as the Seawolves offense would explode in a similar fashion as they did against San Marcos, and record 8 runs on 4 hits to take a commanding 10-1 lead. Another RBI single from Nick Simmons would score outfielder Sean Pauly from third after he led off the inning with a single through the left side. Third baseman Logan Douglas would pick up his 11th RBI of the season with a single into left field to score Ezele Wicks from third. Wicks returned from injury this week and had a nice impact offensively helping provide a pair of runs later in the game.

Otis Statum would reach first off of an error from Cal State LA's third baseman and he would load the bases for outfielder Torreahno Sweet. After struggling from the plate for a couple weeks, Sweet would carry his success from the San Marcos series into today's game and mash a bases clearing double to the right center wall. His 3 RBI's would put SSU up 7-1 and put LA's starter on the verge of exiting the game.

The Golden Eagles starter would walk Joshua Medina in the next at bat and then hit the next three batters, surrendering another pair of runs before getting pulled. Nick Simmons would deliver a sac fly to right and pick up another RBI in the game, scoring Josh Lopez from third who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. The Seawolves would take a commanding 10-1 lead after four innings.

7TH INNING:

Starting pitcher Nick Roth would retire the Golden Eagles in order in the 7th and be in line for the win after exiting the game with a 10-1 lead, striking out three batters and giving up just two runs. The Seawolves would seal the deal with a four run 7th as they recorded another four hits on their way to a 16-2 victory. Torreahno Sweet would lead off the inning with his third hit of the game as he was nearly a couple feet away from his first home run of the season, smashing the ball off the left field fence for a stand-up double. A walk and a hit by pitch would load the bases and allow pinch hitter Desmond Gates to come to the plate. Gates would draw a four pitch walk, his 21st of the season, and get credit for the RBI as Sweet came in to score from third.

Outfielder Ezele Wicks would slap a ball to the second baseman and ground into a double play, but he would allow Medina to score from third to extend SSU's lead to 12-2. Singles from Nick Simmons and Lucas Townsend would score another pair of runs to complete the four run inning. Townsend would battle to a full count and muscle a single up the middle to Simmons from third and give SSU a 14-2 lead.

FINAL: SSU (16) vs. CSULA (2)

Cal State LA would move onto their third pitcher of the game but Sonoma State would draw three walks and a hit batter to lead off the inning and tack on another run. Ezele Wicks would rip a ball up the middle but with well placed infielder's, LA would turn another double play but surrender another run, giving the Seawolves another pair of runs in the 8th and a 16-2 lead.

Sophomore right hander Hogan Weaver would make his 11th appearance of the season and pitch two scoreless innings in the 8th and 9th to maintain the Seawolves lead. Weaver would finish with two innings of work, two strikeouts, and allow a season low zero hits in his outing of relief. Sweet, Simmons, and Dougle would all record three hits in the game as Sweet led the way going 3-4 from the dish with 4 RBI's and 2 runs scored. Simmons would also record a season high 4 RBI's as he went 3-3 from the plate and scored 2 runs as well.

The Seawolves improve to 17-21 overall and 14-15 in CCAA play after taking the series opener in convincing fashion, 16-2 over Cal State LA.
