SB: Seawolves Sweep Cal State East Bay, Win Game 1 on Walk-Off

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – In one of the wildest finishes of the season the Sonoma State softball team earned a walk-off win against Cal State East Bay before finishing the sweep in the nightcap.  Down to their final strike in the series opener the Seawolves pulled out the victory on a triple by Giana Hays who came into score on an overthrow.  The win moved SSU to 32-14 on the season and 20-10 in CCAA play with a 14-game conference winning streak.

The Seawolves looked in control of the first game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth and taking that lead into the sixth inning.  Camille Rodriguez got the start and went three innings of scoreless work before being replaced by Nichole Sarra.  After Sarra pitched her way through the fourth the Sonoma State offense got going in the bottom of the frame.

Rylee Nishimoto led off the inning with a single and Jordan Martinez followed with a walk.  Hays then ripped a single to left field to score Nishimoto for the game's first run.  Cassidy Romano drew a 15-pitch walk to load the bases and Courtney Jack drove in the second run on a sacrifice fly.

Sarra worked her way out of a bases loaded situation in the fifth and the game moved to the sixth still at 2-0.  In the top half of the sixth the Pioneers put together a rally without recording a single hit.  A pair of walks and an error loaded the bases before a fielder's choice with the runner safe at home made it 2-1.  A hit-by-pitch followed by a wild pitch gave CSUEB the lead at 3-2.

The Seawolves put two runners on in the bottom of the inning but could not get a run across and the game moved to the seventh inning.  After a quick two outs to open the bottom of the seventh Martinez drew a walk to put the tying run on base.  Hays stepped up to the plate and battled to a 2-2 count.  She then took the final pitch and drove the ball off the bottom of the left field fence.  Martinez came all the way around to beat the relay throw to tie the score at 3-3.  The ball thrown to the plate got past the catcher and rolled to the backstop with Hays continuing around third at full speed.  She slid into home, just getting under the tag at the plate for the game-winning run before being mauled by her teammates.

Hays finished with two hits and two RBIs with Anna Zoia-Buescher picking up a pair of hits as well.  Martinez walked three times and scored two of the four runs.  Sarra earned her fourth win of the season with four innings of work and allowing just three unearned runs.

The nightcap was all Seawolves as Jesse Dupuis continued her dominance on the mound.  She hurled a complete game one-hitter, allowing just a third inning single in six innings of work.  Dupuis extended her scoreless inning streak to 22.2 innings and has allowed just seven hits during that span.

Offensively, Sonoma State wasted little time getting on the board with a first inning run.  Zoia-Buescher led off with a walk and promptly stole second and third.  Martinez followed with a single to make it 1-0.  The Seawolves would add two more in the third on an RBI single by Nishimoto to score Reagan Hunt and a double steal by Nishimoto and Zoia-Buescher.

With Dupuis cruising on the runner the SSU offense continued to extend their lead with four more runs in the fifth. Hunt and Zoia-Buescher opened the frame with back-to-back singles and moved up a base on a passed ball.  Nishimoto then delivered another RBI single and Martinez plated another with a sacrifice fly.  Hays walked and then pulled off a double steal with Nishimoto to make it 6-0.  After a Romano single moved Hays to third she would later score when a throw to third hit off her helmet and went into the dugout.

The Seawolves put the game away for good in the sixth scoring the final run to end it at 8-0.  Lauren Mirtoni and Hunt led off with two straight singles before Nishimoto finished the game with her third straight RBI single.

Nishimoto led the offense with three hits, three RBIs and three stolen bases in the game.  Hunt also recorded three hits while Zoia-Buescher finished with two hits, three runs and a career high four stolen bases.  The Seawolves went 9 for 9 on steals in the contest with Romano and Hays each adding one apiece.

Sonoma State is carrying several impressive streaks, including a 10-game winning streak into tomorrow's doubleheader.  The Seawolves also have a 14-game CCAA winning streak and are 21-2 in their last 23 games.

Tomorrow's doubleheader starts at 12:00 pm and will be the final home games of the season.  The Seawolves will honor their three seniors; Camille Rodriguez, Jesse Dupuis and Briana Avalos in a ceremony directly following the end of the second game.
