SEASIDE, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball continued their record setting offensive pace at the CCAA Tournament with a 12-8 victory over No. 1 seed Cal State San Marcos to advance to Sunday's Championship game. The Seawolves upped their total for the tournament to 34 runs scored, already breaking the CCAA all-time record that was previously set at 30.
SSU found themselves down early after an opening inning run by the Cougars off starter Jesse Dupuis. The Seawolves would answer back and more in the bottom of the first, putting up seven runs on the top seed.
Anna Zoia-Buescher led off with a single and
Rylee Nishimoto was hit by a pitch.
Jordyn Martinez followed with bunt single to load the bases for
Giana Hays who plated the first run with an RBI single.
Cassidy Romano drove one to the wall for a sacrifice fly before an error scored Martinez to make it 3-0. Hays would then score on a wild pitch before two batters later
Reagan Hunt delivered the big hit, a three-run homerun to right centerfield to end the inning at 7-1.
Cal State San Marcos began chipping away in the second, scoring one run in the second and three more in the third.
Bailee Reed came on in relief in the third and closed out the inning without any further damage to keep the score at 7-5.
Skylar Linnane came up big in the bottom of the fourth to give the Seawolves a cushion, blasting a two-out, two-strike pitch to deep right center for two-run homer. Reed retired six straight batters in the fourth and fifth but the Cougars offense got going again in the sixth. CSUSM scored three runs on three hits, including a two-run double by Brianna Gutierrez to make it a 9-8.
The Seawolves once again answered back in a big way in the bottom of the frame as Martinez led off with a solo homerun over the scoreboard to push the lead back up to two. Romano later reached on a walk and Linnane then doubled down the right field line to put two runners in scoring position.
Courtney Jack then grounded to third, allowing Romano to score with Linnane coming around from second on the throwing error to home.
Reed shut the door in the seventh, striking out the first batter before getting the final two outs in a row to pick up her sixth win of the season. She went 4.2 innings, allowing just three hits and two earned runs while striking out four.
Four Seawolves finished with two hits apiece, including Hunt, Linnane and Martinez who all homered in the contest. Zoia-Buescher also picked up two hits while Hunt finished with a game high three RBIs.
Sonoma State now holds the two highest scoring offensive outputs in CCAA Tournament history with 16 runs on Thursday and 12 more in the semifinal. The 34 total runs are also a new high mark.
