SB: Seawolves Take Home Second Straight CCAA Tournament Title

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team used an 8-run sixth innings to overtake Cal State Monterey Bay 10-5 and earn their second straight CCAA Tournament title.  The Seawolves clinch a berth in the NCAA Tournament with the win and now stand at 40-16 on the season.

SSU found themselves in a familiar position early, trailing after the first inning for the fourth time in the tournament.  The Otters scored a pair of runs in the first off starter Bailee Reed and added another in the second before Jesse Dupuis came on in relief.  Dupuis got out of the second and hurled a scoreless third to send the game to the fourth at 3-0.

Rylee Nishimoto led off the inning with a single before Jordyn Martinez followed with a blast to left field to make it 3-2.  Martinez's homerun was her third of the week, tying the all-time record for most homers in a CCAA tournament.

Cal State Monterey Bay responded with a run in both the fourth and fifth to push their advantage back to three.  Down to their final six outs the Seawolves did what they do best, rise to the occasion.  Martinez led off the inning with a walk and Giana Hays followed with a single up middle.  Cassidy Romano then sent a ball to deep right, hitting off the top of the wall for a single to load the bases.  Next batter Skylar Linnane drop a single over second base to score Martinez.  Courtney Jack followed with an infield single of her own and suddenly the game was 5-4.  Two batters later Reagan Hunt singled to right to tie the game at 5-5.  After a pitching change the Seawolves used a fielder's choice by Anna Zoia-Buescher to take the lead and then got a bases loaded walk from Nishimoto for another.  Martinez, batting for the second time in the inning also reached on a fielder's choice and kept the bases loaded with SSU up 8-5.  The final two runs came on a sacrifice fly by Hays and another single by Romano.

Dupuis took care of the rest, pitching out of trouble in the sixth innings and getting the final three batters of the seventh to fly out and seal the championship.  Dupuis picked up her 14th win of the season and second of the tournament with 5.2 innings of work.  She allowed just one earned run and striking out three.

Martinez once again paced the Seawolves offense, finishing with two-hits for the fourth straight time in the tournament.  She also homered in her third straight contest and tied the tournament record for hits with eight.  Romano and Jack also added two hits and an RBI each.

Martinez was named the tournament's MVP with Romano, Hunt and Linnane joining her on the All-Tournament team.  Sonoma State hit .365 as a team in their four games, totaling a tournament record 44 runs, shattering the previous high of 30.

The Seawolves have won 29 of their last 33 games and now wait to see where they will be headed in the NCAA Tournament.  SSU was ranked 5th in the last West Region poll.  The selection show will air at 7:00 am Monday morning and can be viewed at ncaa.com.
