ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team opened their 2022 campaign with a tough luck loss at home against Western Oregon. The Seawolves held a 34-5 shot advantage including 14 shots on target but the Wolves scored the game's only goal in the 10
th minute to earn the victory.
SSU's offense controlled the tempo from the start with three shots in the first eight minutes but a costly turnover in the 10
th minute led to a Western Oregon score. Jenna Efraimson collect an errant pass and dribbled towards the goalline outside of the box. She left a high left footed ball over the goalie and into the backside net.
The Seawolves continued to pepper the goal with shots for the remainder of the half but could not get one by goalie Olivia Holdenreid. One of the best chances of the first came in the 40
th minute when
Lexi Zandonella-Arasa sent a rocket shot from outside of the box that was saved by a leaping Holdenreid in the top right side of the goal. Sonoma ended the half with a 14-3 shot lead including five on frame.
Sonoma State dominated the second half, racking up 20 shots, nine of which were on target but Holdenreid made save-after-save. The Seawolves also had a shot by
Ashley Frye clang off the crossbar and later in the final minutes had an attempt by
Julia Pritchard bounced off the left post. The Seawolves final chance came in the 86
th minute when
Kamryn Shigemoto ripped a shot from 25 yards out that Holdenreid was able to just tip over the crossbar.
Zandonella-Arasa led all players with eight shots, four of which were on frame. SSU goalie
Phoebe Barnes made four stops in net.
The Seawolves are back in action on Tuesday when they head to San Francisco to take on Academy of Art.
