SAN FRANCISCO – The Sonoma State women's soccer team put on an offensive showcase on Tuesday afternoon, racking up three goals in each half and totaling 31 shots in a 6-0 victory over Academy of Art.
Lexi Zandonella-Arasa scored three goals for her first career hat trick while freshman
Annette Sotelo netted the first two of her career.
The Seawolves were on the attack from the start, controlling the ball for most of the first half and holding an 18-1 shot advantage. Zandonella-Arasa put the first point on the board in the 15
th minute when she fielded a pass just outside the box from
Kapri McMillan. Zandonella-Arasa turned onto her left foot and sent a rocket shot into the upper right corner for the early lead.
McMillan and Zandonella-Arasa were featured in the Seawolves' second goal as well, combining for the double assists on Sotelo's first career goal. Zandonella-Arasa sent a pass from the goaline inside the six to McMillan who received it in the center of the net. Rather than try to shot it past a closing defender, McMillan laid it to her left to a wide-open Sotelo for the tap-in. Four minutes later Sotelo scored again, following up a shot from
Julia Pritchard to slip the rebound under the goalie for a 3-0 halftime lead.
Sonoma State kept the offensive pressure up in the second half while the defense did not give an inch. The Seawolves outshot the Urban Knights 13-0 in the second and once again netted three goals. After a scoreless twenty minutes Zandonella-Arasa notched her second goal on the goal, receiving as great pass from
Kastle Lyman and placing the right footed shot inside the far post. Zandonella-Arasa struck again four minutes later with an unbelievable goal from 30 yards out. She fielded the ball off a failed clear and took a few touches to her left before firing a shot from well outside the box. The ball dipped just under the crossbar to complete her hat trick and give her a seven-point afternoon.
The Seawolves were not yet done as they would add one more in the 90
th minute when
Hailey Freeman scored her first goal off a pass over the defense by
Julia Betti.
Kennedy Williams picked up her first win and first shutout with a full 90 minutes in net.
Zandonella-Arasa's hat trick was the first in nearly ten years for the Seawolves with the last one coming in 2012 from Lauren Fryer. She also totaled eight shots for the second straight gaming, keeping her tied for the top spot in the nation.
