BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Sonoma State volleyball team picked up their second win in as many days with a three-set sweep of No. 20 ranked Ferris State. The Seawolves improved to 2-1 on the season with both wins coming against 2021 NCAA Tournament teams.
Once again SSU showed fantastic resilience, storming from behind in the first set to overtake the Bulldogs. Sonoma State scored the first three points of the set but saw themselves fall behind by as many as six at 18-12. The Seawolves rattled off five straight to pull within one thanks to back-to-back kills by
Jessie Hobbs. The Bulldogs scored the next point before SSU ripped off seven in a row to force set point.
Jen Trephan started the run with a kill and
Jaden Krist added four more in a five-point stretch. Ferris State scored the next two but a service error put the Seawolves up 25-21.
Sonoma State started their run earlier in the second set, racking up five straight points after trailing 9-7 and never looked back. The Seawolves attack was unstoppable in the second, registering 14 kills and just two errors while hitting .407 as a team.
Brooklyn Jackson came up with some big early kills to pick up four in the set while Hobbs, Krist, Trephan,
Jaden Krist and
Leilani Hallman combined for nine more.
The Seawolves completed the sweep in the third set with a pair of key five point runs. The first came early with the score 8-7 to give Sonoma a cushion and the last one took a two-point lead to seven late in the set. Hobbs and Jackson combined to score four of the five points during the last run and Richardson put the final one down to force match point.
Jackson led all players with a match high nine kills while hitting .533. Hobbs finished with eight kills of her own and hit over .400 with freshman
Kaden Young recorded a career high 17 digs. Richardson (7), Krist (5) and Hallman (5) combined for 17 kills to bring the Seawolves total to 38.
Sonoma State closes out the WWU Invitational tomorrow with a final match against Regis State at 12:00 pm.
