BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Sonoma State volleyball team continued their torrid start with a 3-1 victory over Regis to close out their opening weekend with a 3-1 record. The Seawolves registered a season high 52 kills, taking the final three sets 25-16, 25-16 and 25-15.
It was the Rangers who jumped out early, taking the first set 25-17 in part to ten attack errors by Sonoma. Regis led wire-to-wire in the first, breaking an 8-8 tie and never looking back.
The Seawolves rebounded in the second set, using two four point runs and another of six to put the set away. Leading 10-9,
Kiana Richardson and
Jessie Hobbs spurred a four-point spurt to give SSU some breathing room. Later, Richardson added two more and
Leilani Hallman picked up one of her own to extend the margin to 21-13. An ace by
Kaden Young gave the Seawolves match point which they would take advantage of two points later to even the match.
The third set was once again all Sonoma State as their attack caught fire and racked up 19 kills while hitting well over .400.
Jaden Krist delivered three early kills while Richardson added two as the Seawolves led 11-7. The Rangers hung around, pulling within two at 18-16 before SSU ripped off seven straight points to put the set away. Krist added three more kills during that run with
Brooklyn Jackson tacking on two of her own. Krist finished with eight of the team's 19 kills in the set with Jackson adding four.
The Seawolves slammed the door in the fourth, using runs of 8-1 and 7-1 to seal the match. After trailing 6-5, SSU won eight of the next nine on four kills and two aces. Regis scored the next three before Sonoma won seven of the next eight to push their advantage to 20-11. Krist would end the match on her 11
th and final kill of the day.
Richardson led all players with 13 kills while Krist added 11 kills and zero errors on just 19 attempts. She hit .579 for the match with Jackson and Hallman adding nine and eight kills respectively. Trephan finished with another great all-around performance, recording six kills, 24 assists and 12 digs. Young set another career high with 19 digs.
Sonoma State returns home next week when they host a three day tournament starting on Thursday evening with a match against Holy Names.
