ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team picked up a big victory on Saturday afternoon, taking down a top-10 team in a 2-1 victory over Western Washington. The 20
th ranked Seawolves improved to 2-1 on the season with their second win of the week. Senior captain
Julia Pritchard converted a penalty kick in the first half and freshman
Annette Sotelo delivered the game-winner in the 52
nd minute to provide the scoring punch for Sonoma State.
The game was back-and-forth to start with the teams trading shots early in the contest. SSU goalie
Phoebe Barnes made a big save in the early going to keep the game scoreless and each team sat at three shots apiece 20 minutes into the game. In the 26
th minute
Malia Falk played a ball into the box that resulted in a handball and a penalty kick for the Seawolves. Pritchard stepped up and buried the shot into the top right corner for her first goal of the season.
The Vikings pressed up for the remainder of the first half and developed a couple of chances. Barnes was able to make a couple more big saves but Western Washington was able to tie contest in the 44
th minute on a strike from Estera Levinte. Levinte received the pass along the right side, cut back to the inside and fired the shot from just outside the box that dipped below the bar and into the side of the net.
The Seawolves opened the second half aggressively and netted the go-ahead score just under seven minutes into the period. Falk received the ball on the defensive side of the field and took off towards the goal, carrying the ball for over one-third of the pitch. She then played it forward to a charging Sotelo who beat the goalie to the ball and slid the shot under her for the goal. The score was Sotelo's third of the week after notching a brace against Academy of Art on Tuesday.
Sonoma State's defense did the rest, keeping the Vikings off the board for the final 39 minutes.
Krissy Keller was a force on the backline for the Seawolves the entire game, constantly clearing the ball from trouble while Barnes made a season high eight saves.
The win over Western Washington was the team's first since 2006 and their first over a top-10 ranked opponent since 2019.
The Seawolves are back in action on Monday when they take on Dominican in San Rafael at 4:00 pm.
