MSOC: Seawolves Fall Short in Home Opener to Simon Fraser, Outshoot SFU 11-8

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Thursday, September 1st, the Sonoma State men's soccer team would face off against GNAC powerhouse Simon Fraser but come up short in their home opener, dropping the match 2-0.

An energetic start and some teasing shots from distance would get head coach Marcus Ziemer and his squad off to a good start but SFU would strike first off of a distance shot of their own. A nearly 40 yard bomb from SFU's Nicolai Placzek would have a nasty and sudden drop as it drilled the back of the net, giving them the sudden 1-0 advantage.

Sonoma State would go on to outshoot Simon Fraser 7-3 in the second half and record the better chances for the majority of the half. Senior midfielder Ulysses Vega would play all 90 minutes for the Seawolves and record a match high 6 shots.

SFU would strike again in the 57th minute off of a set piece down near the goal line of SSU. After a foul committed just 10 yards off of the goal line outside the penalty box, Simon Fraser drew up a clever play off the free kick, allowing a back pass to the penalty spot that was hammered home first time. The Seawolves would fail to get on the scoreboard despite outshooting the opposition 11-8 after the 90 minutes. Midfielder Bryan Rosales would record a season high 3 shots with 2 of them on target in his 72 minutes of action while both SSU center backs, Matt Walleigh and Federico Barbieri, would go the distance and play all 90 minutes.

Sonoma State will look to bounce back and snag their first win of the 2022 season in another home contest against St. Martin's this Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 AM and tickets can be bought online at sonomaseawolves.com/tickets.
