WSOC: Seawolves Tie No. 7 Point Loma on Late Goal

SAN DIEGO – The Sonoma State women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-1 tie on the road against No. 7 ranked Point Loma on Wednesday.  The Seawolves used a goal in the 83rd minute by Lexi Zandonella-Arasa to even the game and move their record to 3-1-1 on the season.

Sonoma State opened the game strong, recording the first three shots with Julia Pritchard, Krissy Keller and Zandonella-Arasa each notching a shot in the first ten minutes.  From there the game evened out with each squad registering two shots over the final 35 minutes of the first.  The Seawolves best chance came from Andrea Lozano whose shot from 25 yards out went just over the crossbar.  SSU's defense limited the Sea Lions to just two shots in the half, none of which were on target.

The second half was much more wide open with 17 total shots between the two teams.  Point Loma got on the board first in the 70th minute after earning a free kick from right outside the box.  Emma Thrapp took the kick and dipped it over the wall and under the crossbar for the game's first goal.

The Seawolves still trailed into the final ten minutes before Zandanella-Arasa struck just a couple of ticks after the 82nd minute.  Lisette Almanza got the opportunity going, taking a clear down in the middle of the field and beating a pair of PLNU defenders.  She then played a slip pass to Zandonella-Arasa who got free in the box.  Zandonella-Arasa took a touch and buried the shot inside the left post for the equalizer.  The goal was her team leading fourth of the season while the assist was the first career point for Almanza.

The Sea Lions took the final four shots of the contest but Phoebe Barnes came up big in net with three saves.  PLNU held a 14-10 shot advantage for the contest.

Sonoma State closes out their non-conference schedule on Saturday with a road date against San Francisco State.
