SAN FRANCISCO – The Sonoma State volleyball team dropped a CCAA match on Friday evening, falling to San Francisco State 3-1 in a four-set battle. The Seawolves lost the first two sets 19-25 and 19-25 before winning the third 28-26. SFSU closed the door in the fourth to pick up the win 25-22.
SSU started strong in the first, taking an early 7-5 lead before an 8-1 Gator run flipped the set. San Francisco State never trailed again in the first as the Seawolves struggled with their attack, recording just seven kills and committing nine errors.
Sonoma State found themselves down big in the second after a big run by the Gators made it 19-8. The Seawolves worked their way back into the set with a 9-1 response to pull back within three.
Jessie Hobbs recorded two kills in a row and
Jen Trephan added two straight aces. With the score 20-17, SFSU scored the next three to give themselves some breathing room and take the set a couple points later.
The third set was back and forth from the start with the teams trading points throughout. The Seawolves largest lead came at 15-10 before the Gators chipped away and took a lead of their own at 19-18. SSU scored the next two points following by San Francisco State recording the two after that to make it 22-21. Sonoma State forced set point at 24-22 after a three-point spurt but the Gators tied it once again at 24-24. The two teams traded the next five points with the Seawolves earning set point at 27-26. Trephan and
Leilani Hallman picked up the next point on a combined block to force a fourth set.
The Gators put the match away in the fourth, using a five-point run to turn a 7-4 deficit into a 9-7 advantage. SFSU later took a 14-10 lead before the Seawolves ripped off five-in-a-row to go ahead 15-14. A 6-1 run put the Gators back on top and they would never trail again in a 25-22 victory.
The Seawolves were outkilled for just the second time all season with the Gators holding a 64-44 advantage.
Brooklyn Jackson led the team with 11 kills while Trephan added ten kills, 19 assists and four aces.
Kiana Richardson tacked on nine kills and
Jaden Krist finished with a team high six blocks.
Sonoma State is back in action tomorrow night when they head down to Seaside to take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 5:00 pm.
