VB: Seawolves Sweep of Otters behind Triple-Double by Trephan

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball team put one in the win column on Saturday evening, sweeping Cal State Monterey Bay 25-14. 25-22 and 25-22.  The Seawolves racked up 41 kills in the three-sets with Jen Trephan recording a triple-double with 10 kills, 18 assists and 18 digs.

The first set started with the teams trading points before SSU ripped off five straight points to take the lead for good.  Jaden Krist, Brooklyn Jackson and Kiana Richardson all notched kills during the run with Krist adding an ace as well.  The kills continued to mount as the Seawolves lead grew to double digits.  Brynna Slayton put the set away with an ace as Sonoma State took a 1-0 lead.  The Seawolves hit over .400 for the set and finished with 13 kills and just one error.

The Otters jumped out early in the second, taking a 4-1 lead and later led 15-12.  SSU answered back with a six-point run to regain the advantage.  Leilani Hallman picked up a kill and Kaden Young added two aces.  CSUMB scored the next four to lead by one but the Seawolves responded and gained the upper hand for good with another three-point run of their own.  With SSU leading 22-21 they would close out the set with three of the next four points, all off kills from Krist.

The Seawolves put the match away in the third set, jumping out to a lead and holding off a late Monterey Bay run.  Sonoma State broke the set open with six straight points to make it 15-7 and eventually led 23-15.  The Otters mounted a comeback attempt by winning the next six points but Jessie Hobbs ended it for good with a kill on match point.  SSU finished the second and third sets with 14 kills in each.

Richardson led all players with 11 kills while Krist added eight kills and 16 digs.  Young also tacked on 16 digs to help the Seawolves allow just 26 kills all match.

Sonoma State returns home next week for their CCAA home opener on Thursday evening for a match against Chico State.
