WSOC: Seawolves Notch Five Goals in Shutout of Cal Poly Humboldt

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team had everything working on Sunday afternoon, using a high-powered offense and a smothering defense to topple Cal Poly Humboldt 5-0.  The Seawolves netted two goals in the opening half and three more in the first 20 minutes of the second to move to 5-2-1 on the season.

Sonoma State wasted little time gaining the lead as Malia Falk scored in the 3rd minute of play.  Julia Pritchard got the sequence started, taking down a failed clear and playing to Falk at the top of the box.  Falk touched the ball around the defender, ran onto it and sent the right-footed shot inside the far post for her second goal of the season.

Falk was back at it in the 11th minute, this time setting up Annette Sotelo.  Falk received the ball on the defensive side of the field and pushed it forward.  She beat three defenders and laid off a perfect pass to Sotelo who beat the goalie inside the right post.  The rest of the half went by without another score and SSU holding a 12-3 shot advantage.

The Seawolves continued their offensive display in the second half, scoring in the 55th, 57th and 64th minutes.  Sotelo netted her second goal of the game and fifth of the season off a perfect cross from Julia Horner-Bell.  Zandonella-Arasa played the through ball to Horner-Bell on the left goal line.  She then sent the cross in front of the net where Sotelo one-timed it into the top left corner.

Less than two minutes later Zandonella-Arasa was taken down in the box to draw a penalty kick.  She stepped up and slid the PK past the keeper for her team leading seventh goal of the season.  The final score came in the 64th minute with Falk scoring once again, this time following up a rebound off a shot from Zandonella-Arasa.

Falk finished the game with two goals and an assist while Zandonella-Arasa added one goal and two assists.

The Seawolves finished with a 21-5 shot advantage for the contest, including 9-1 in shots on goal.  Kennedy Williams earned her second shutout of the season with one save in net for Sonoma State.

SSU is back in action next week for a pair of road CCAA contests, first at Cal State East Bay on Friday night and then at Stanislaus State on Sunday.
