HAYWARD, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team scored twice in the final six minutes to defeat Cal State East Bay 2-0 in a big road victory on Friday evening.
Lexi Zandonella-Arasa and
Andrea Lozano delivered the goals as the Seawolves improved to 6-2-1 on the season.
The game started with both teams feeling out the flow and recording three shots apiece in the first 26 minutes. The first real chance for Sonoma State came in the 30
th minute when
Malia Falk sent a shot from just outside the box towards the far post. CSUEB goalie Jordan Smith made a leaping stop to push the shot just wide and keep it scoreless.
Kennedy Williams made a fantastic save in net for the Seawolves just a few minutes later and the game went to halftime still scoreless.
The first 35 minutes of the second half went by without a goal and the game looked headed for a deadlock. However, in the 85
th minute the Seawolves netted a goal to take the lead with just under six minutes remaining.
Julia Horner-Bell sent a cross into the box from the right side and Zandonella-Arasa headed it inside the near post for the score. The goal was her team and CCAA leading 8
th goal of the season while extending her goal scoring streak to five games.
Sonoma State's defense put the clamps down for the final five minutes, not allowing a shot and helping produce another goal. The Seawolves used a counter attack in the closing seconds to add a goal with just 22 seconds left to play. Falk played the ball ahead to Lozano who slid it past the charging goalie and inside the far post for her first goal of the season.
Williams earned her third shutout of the season with a career high six saves. She has not allowed a goal this season with nearly 300 minutes of scoreless action in net.
The Seawolves are on the road again on Sunday when they head down to Turlock to take on Stanislaus State.
