ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball team picked up their second straight sweep, cruising to victory over Chico State 25-16, 25-19 and 25-14. The Seawolves put on a defensive show, recording 11 blocks and limiting the Wildcats to a negative hitting percentage.
SSU wasted little time building a lead in the first set, using a 7-1 run to jump put to a 13-5 advantage. Several points later
Jen Trephan notched back-to-back kills and
Brynna Slayton recorded a pair of aces to make it 19-8. The Seawolves would eventually put the set away with kills by
Jessie Hobbs and
Brooklyn Jackson.
The second set was closer throughout but the Sonoma State attack proved to be too much. The Seawolves racked up 16 kills in the set, a high for the match with three kills apiece coming from Trephan, Jackson,
Leilani Hallman and
Kiana Richardson. SSU broke a 15-15 tie by winning five of the next six points and finishing off the Wildcats at 25-19.
The Seawolves closed out the match with a third set victory behind a .481 hitting percentage. Sonoma State racked up 14 kills in the final set with just one error while limiting Chico State to just seven kills. SSU scored 12 of the final 14 points to run past the Wildcats and earn the sweep.
Sonoma State racked up 42 kills, 11 blocks and eight aces on the night while Chico State finished with 20 kills and 21 errors. Hallman and Hobbs combined for 16 kills and just one error with Hobbs finishing with seven kills in eight attempts. Trephan finished with nine kills, nine digs and 12 assists. Slayton and Richardson tacked on three aces apiece with
Kaden Young leading all players with 16 digs.
After a day off, the Seawolves will host Stanislaus State on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
