WSOC: Seawolves Score Four Unanswered to Erase Early Deficit and Topple Stanislaus State 4-2

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team mounted a furious comeback on Sunday afternoon, scoring the game's final four goals in a 4-2 victory over Stanislaus State.  The Seawolves scored four goals in thirty minutes of game time to erase a 2-0 deficit and improve to 7-2-1 on the season.

SSU was on the attack from the start, notching four shots in the opening minutes but it was the Warriors who struck first.  Sabrina Cabrera scored a goal from 22 yards out in the 9th minute on Stanislaus's first shot of the game to go ahead 1-0.  The Warriors made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute on a goal by Alexis Brewah after a turnover in the defensive third.

The Seawolves continued on the offensive attack for the remainder of the first half and broke through in the 42nd minute on their 11th and final shot of the half.  After a short corner kick to Ashley Frye she sent a cross into the box that was headed wide by a defender.  Krissy Keller ran to the ball at the top of the box and loft a chip over the goalie's head and inside the far post to make it 2-1.  The goal was Keller's first of the season.

Sonoma State wasted little time evening the match in the second half, scoring on their first shot of the period to make it 2-2.  The Warriors committed a costly turnover after a pass back to the goalie was intercepted by Lexi Zandonella-Arasa inside the box.  She calmly received the ball and slid the shot under the goalie for the equalizer.  Less than four minutes later Zandonella-Arasa struck again to give the Seawolves their first lead of the contest.  Sonoma State moved the ball up the field with a series of nice passes leading to Julia Betti coming down the right side near midfield.  She pushed the ball forward a played a long ball over the defense.  Zandonella-Arasa touched the ball down and then sent a shot inside the far post for her CCAA leading 10th goal of the season.

The scoring was not finished for SSU as they would add an insurance goal in the 72nd minute.  Zandonella-Arasa was on the assisting side this time, sending a cross from the right side into the box that Frye was able to head past the diving goalie for her second goal of the season.  The Seawolves defense did the rest from there, keeping the Warriors off the board for the final 19 minutes.

Sonoma State racked up 30 shots in the contest, including a season high 19 on target.  Meanwhile Stanislaus State managed seven shots but scored on both of their shots on goal.  Zandonella-Arasa extended her goal scoring streak to six games and now leads the conference in goals (10), assists (5), points (25), game-winning-goals (3), shots and shots on goal.

The Seawolves have now won three straight and are 3-1 in CCAA play.  They will continue conference play next week with a trip down to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday for a game in the Dignity Health Sports Park.
