SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team dropped a tough on Thursday evening, surrendering a fourth quarter lead in a loss to Cal State San Bernardino 65-58. The Seawolves moved to 8-9 overall and 5-6 in the CCAA with the defeat.
The Coyotes scored the first four points of the contest before
Camille Johnson got SSU on the board.
Jayme Blackard scored the next three points before
Amanda Luckett gave the Seawolves their first lead with two free throws and a layup.
Chasity Spady ended the first with a basket of her own to put Sonoma State ahead 11-10.
The teams traded baskets throughout the second with Luckett picking up the scoring at the start. She scored the Seawolves first four points of the quarter.
Cielo Gonzalez later drained a 3-pointer and
Emerson Herrmann added six of the final eight points to send the game to the break tied at 30-30.
CSUSB came out strong to open the third quarter on a 9-3 with the only points for Sonoma State coming on a triple by Gonzalez. The Seawolves responded with eight straight, four of which came from
Alli McDonald to retake the lead. After the Coyotes tied the score Spady and Blackard each delivered baskets to put SSU on top 45-42 after three.
The Seawolves maintained the three-point advantage halfway through the fourth with baskets by Luckett, McDonald and
Camille Johnson. San Bernardino tied the score with a 3-pointer but SSU grabbed it back with a pair of free-throws by Blackard to make it 56-55 with 3:02 remaining. The final three minutes was all Coyotes as the home team ended the game on a 9-2 run with a couple clutch jumpers and free-throws.
Sonoma State struggled from the field in the game, shooting just 29% and making just 2 of 16 from long range. Luckett led the way with 14 points and seven rebounds. Blackard added nine points and three steals while Gonzalez finished with a career high nine rebounds.
The Seawolves close out the road trip on Saturday when they take on Cal Poly Pomona before returning home for a pair of games next week.
