ARCATA, Calif. –
Brooklyn Jackson picked a perfect spot for a new career high as she racked up 18 kills as the Sonoma State volleyball team took the final three sets in a 3-1 win over Cal Poly Humboldt. The Seawolves improved to 10-6 on the season and 5-4 in CCAA play with the victory and await another showdown with the Lumberjacks on Saturday.
The first set was back-and-forth from the start, featuring 15 ties and 5 lead changes. SSU recorded a match best 18 kills in the first set but Humboldt used a huge serving advantage to pull away with a 25-22 win. The Jacks registered four aces and the Seawolves committed five service errors to help swing the set.
Sonoma State dusted themselves off in the second set, leading wire-to-wire to even the match with a 25-20 victory. The Seawolves scored the first four points and held a 14-6 kill advantage. Jackson was absolutely unstoppable in the set, ripping off nine kills in just ten attempts and hitting .900. Jackson and
Leilani Hallman also combined on three blocks.
The Seawolves put together another wire-to-wire win in the third set with a 9-0 run to open. Krist recorded four kills during the run and finished with five in the set. The Jacks closed to within three at 18-15 but a four-point spurt by the Seawolves gave some breathing room.
Jen Trephan notched back-to-back kills to force set point and
Jackie Winfield picked up the final one to make it 25-17.
SSU put the match away in the fourth, breaking away from the Jacks after tying the score at 16-16. The Seawolves used four straight points to open a lead and then capped it off with a 4-1 run to seal it. Four different Seawolves recorded kills in that final run with Jackson, Krist, Trephan and
Emily Hernandez all adding to their totals.
Sonoma State held a 61-37 kill advantage for the contest and recorded at least 12 kills in each set. Jackson finished with a match and career best 18 kills and opened with 15 kills in her first 18 attempts. She also set a career with six blocks. Trephan just missed a triple-double, ending with 9 kills, 31 assists and 10 digs while Krist added 11 kills, 9 of which came in the final two sets.
Riley Beyma led all players with 22 digs and Hernandez tacked on 9 kills of her own.
