ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Sunday, October 15th, the Sonoma State men's soccer team got back in the win column with a thrilling 3-2 road victory over Stanislaus State as they overcame two deficits in the game to net the winner in the 71st minute. Center back
Ian Reis would play hero for the Seawolves as he recorded his first career goal with an acrobatic side volley off a set piece cross from
Jose Rios Lara.
Despite going down twice in the game, just four minutes after kickoff and two minutes into the second half, head coach
Marcus Ziemer and his squad continued to fight as they have all season long and saw goals from
Elliot Stanley,
Patrick Neill and
Ian Reis to pull off the gutsy road win. The three points moved SSU into sole possession of sixth place in the conference standings as they have firm control of their postseason fate heading into the final two weeks of the regular season. Stanley and Reis recorded their first goals of their SSU careers and Neill netted his team leading third goal of the season with a penalty in the 48th minute.
After a failed clearance from the Warriors back line, sophomore defender
Elliot Stanley would come flying in from the right side of the field to collect the loose ball and take a pair of decisive touches towards the top of the 18-yard box. With the ball still bouncing, Stanley would show exquisite technique and hit a beautiful half volley into the top right corner of the goal. The keeper stood no chance as Stanley would give the Seawolves the spark they needed just seven minutes before the half and tie the game up at one a piece.
Coming out of the break, the first three minutes would flip the game on it's head as both teams would trade off a pair of penalty kick goals. Stanislaus would convert their penalty in the 47th minute and then
Oliver Ziemer would draw the penalty for SSU just one minute later, allowing
Patrick Neill to equalize for his third of the season.
After a pair of quick goals making it 2-2 in the opening minutes of the second half, the game would settle down for the next 20 minutes until Sonoma State would capitalize on a free kick from the left side of the field. The Seawolves haven't had much luck with set pieces this season but this one came right from the training grounds and it ended up in the back of the net off the foot of center back
Ian Reis. Freshman defender
Caleb Yoon would stand over the free kick and play it short down the left side of the box to midfielder
Jose Rios Lara. The Warriors seemed to be prepared for it but Lara's shimmy would create enough separation to whip in a dangerous cross right to the penalty spot. Potentially anticipating a header opportunity, Reis would instead adjust and throw a spectacular scissors kick and connect with the left footed volley that would roll into the back of the net without any dive from the Stanislaus keeper.
