SAN MARCOS, CALIF. - On Friday, October 20th, the Sonoma State men's soccer team pulled off another gutsy performance on the road, netting two goals in the second half to split the points with Cal State San Marcos. The Seawolves fell behind in the first ten minutes of the half but kept the pressure on all game long and scored just two minutes into the second half to tie the game at one. Twenty minutes later, a brilliant goal from distance by
Jvon Cunningham would give them a 2-1 advantage but the lead would be short lived as the Cougars earned a questionable penalty in the 80th minute to tie the game again and finish 2-2.
Despite an early deficit, the Seawolves have played exceptionally well from behind this season and showcased that once again on Friday. Freshman defender
Barry Cahalane has been seeing time as a target forward in recent weeks and was able to make his time count with his first career goal just two minutes into the second half. Fellow freshman
Alejandro Zarate served a corner kick to the back post where Cahalane converted with a strong header to tie the game up at one.
A little over twenty minutes later, the Seawolves would take full control of the match with a stellar team goal to give them a 2-1 lead. Center back
Ian Reis would shed a pressing forward from San Marcos and drive into the midfield. He would fit a tight pass splitting the Cougars midfield to senior
Sean Rohane who then targeted
Oswaldo Rojas in front of the back line. Rojas would play a clever first time flick pass wide to
Jvon Cunningham who would go on to beat his defender inside and hit a curling shot over the keeper for his team leading fourth goal of the season.
Sonoma State went on to outshoot San Marcos 7-3 in the second half and recorded four more corner kicks.
Patrick Neill led the way with two shots on goal, Cahalane and Zarate each had two shots and SSU keeper
Reinier ter Riet finished the game with a pair of saves.
