POMONA, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball team upended nationally ranked Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday afternoon in a huge road victory. The Seawolves won the first, third and then an intense fifth set to pick up a crucial CCAA win.
SSU could not have scripted a better first set, coming out strong and taking down the Broncos 25-21. The Seawolves racked up 17 kills without a single attacking error and hit well over .400. The set was tied at 18-18 before kills by
Brooklyn Jackson,
Jackie Winfield and
Leilani Hallman put Sonoma State on top for good.
Jaden Krist was unstoppable, recording six kills on just ten tries.
The Broncos answered back in the second set, leading wire-to-wire to even the match at 1-1. The Seawolves reached double figures in kills but also committed ten attacking errors to help Pomona. SSU regroup for the third set and used a huge 10-1 run to break the set open. With the Broncos leading 11-10 the Seawolves would win ten of the next eleven points to lead 20-12.
Kaili Spooner recorded the next point with her fifth kill of the set and
Emily Hernandez put down the final point with a kill of her own.
The back-and-forth contest continued in the fourth with CPP evening the match at 2-2. The Broncos jumped out early, leading 9-4 and held off a couple Sonoma State runs to take it 25-19 and force a fifth set.
Cal Poly Pomona stormed out again in the fifth, winning five of the first six to lead 5-1. After a SSU timeout the Seawolves rebounded with four straight to even the set at 5-5. From that point on neither team would lead by more than two for the remainder of the match. The fifth set featured ten ties and five lead changes as it moved towards the 15
th point. With the score tied 12-12 the Broncos took their final lead of the contest and served to look to make it match points. Hallman had other ideas, notching her 12
th kill of the day to knot it back up at 13-13. The Seawolves then earned match point with a big kill by Krist to set up an incredible final rally. After several attempts by both teams
Kaden Young recorded a full extension diving dig to set up a pass by
Jen Trephan. Trephan set it out wide to Krist who knocked the ball off the block and out of bounds to seal the win.
Krist finished the afternoon with a team high 16 kills while Hallman added 12 with zero errors and six blocks. Trephan just missed another triple-double with 9 kills, 30 assists, 23 digs and 5 blocks while Hernandez tacked on 7 kills and 7 blocks.
The Seawolves improved to 12-7 overall and 7-5 in CCAA play to stay inside of the top-6. SSU returns home next week for a pair of matches, taking on Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday and Cal State East Bay on Saturday. Live video is available on the CCAA Network with live stats at
