Seawolves Return Home with Sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball team returned home on Thursday with a three-set sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay 25-21, 26-24 and 21-18.  The Seawolves improved to 13-7 overall and 8-5 in CCAA play with the victory.

SSU came out strong, taking a 7-2 lead behind a pair of aces by Brynna Slayton.  The Seawolves attack was clicking as well with six different players recording kills on the way to a 19-10 advantage.  CSUMB began chipping away, pulling to within three but Kiana Richardson notched three kills in the final five points to seal the win.

The Otters stormed out to a lead in the second half, racing out a 12-6 lead and forcing a Sonoma State timeout.  After the stoppage the Seawolves cut the deficit in half with three straight points and later used a four-point run to make it 17-16.  Emily Hernandez picked up two straight kills during the run but the Otters scored the next two to go back ahead by three.  SSU would go on to tie the score at 21-21 and worked their way to set-point on back-to-back kills by Brooklyn Jackson.  The Otters evened the set at 24-24 but Jackson struck again with another kill and Slayton ended the set with an ace to make it 2-0.  Jackson finished the set with six kills to lead all players.

Cal State Monterey Bay once again started strong to open the third, leading 7-3 early on.  The Seawolves answered with three in a row and after a point by the Otters they would rip off another six straight.  Jackson recorded three kills during the run and added a block.  Leading 12-8 the Seawolves never looked back, leading by at least two the rest of the way before eventually stretching the advantage to as many as seven.  Richardson and Jackson recorded the final two points on kills to seal the sweep for SSU.

The Seawolves held a 43-32 kill edge for the match while also leading 9-2 in aces.  Jackson and Richardson finished with 11 kills apiece to lead all players.  Slayton finished with four aces while Jen Trephan added 5 kills, 22 assists and 12 digs.  Riley Beyma also reached double figures in digs with a match high 13.
