MSOC: Fourth Ranked Golden Eagles Score Three against Seawolves at Sunrise Park

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Friday, October 27th, the Sonoma State men's soccer team took on their second top five opponent this season as the fourth ranked Golden Eagles came to town for a CCAA contest. SSU sustained quality spells of possession early on and generated three shots against the Cal State LA goalkeeper but they would strike first with a clinical finish in the 11th minute against the run of play. The Seawolves would produce another trio of shots over the next 25 minutes but once again LA would put together a cross and finish in transition and double their lead just before the half.

The game would slowly get away from Sonoma State as they have plenty to play for in their final two regular season games. LA would net a stellar free kick goal just four minutes into the second half to put them up 3-0. The Seawolves would outshoot the fourth ranked Golden Eagles 6-4 in the first half forcing three saves from their keeper. Head coach Marcus Ziemer went deep into his bench with twelve different players coming off the bench for SSU.

Six different players would tally shots for the Seawolves including quality attempts on goal from wingers Jvon Cunningham, Patrick Neill and midfielder Alejandro Zarate. Redshirt freshman Jack Chapman would start the game in goal for his 7th start of the season and finish with a team high three saves. Junior keeper Reinier ter Riet would finish the game in the second half with 28 minutes of action.

CCAA STANDINGS

Sonoma State falls to 6-7-3 overall and 4-4-1 in conference action. They still control their own fate with two games remaining and a win on Sunday would put them in a great spot before the regular season finale next Thursday. The Seawolves entered the day in a tie for fifth with Chico State at 13 points and they still have an avenue to climb to the fourth spot and host a quarterfinals game in the first round of the conference tournament.
