ROHNERT PARK, Calif. –
Julia Betti headed home a fantastic goal in the 85
th minute to cap off a strong performance and earn the Sonoma State women's soccer team a 1-1 draw with Cal State LA. The Seawolves racked up 17 shots for the game, including 13 in the second half to lead the Eagles by six in that category.
SSU found themselves down early when a failed cleared led to a clean look at the goal by Erin Schrock. Her shot from just outside the box hit the crossbar and went straight down, just hitting inside the goal line for an early 1-0 lead. The Seawolves put some pressure on offensively in the first half, recording four shots, all of which were on target but were kept off the board by Taesja Paopao's four saves. The Eagles meanwhile also finished the first with four shots.
The Seawolves really got going in the second half, peppering shots throughout and putting constant pressure on Cal State LA. After the Eagles recorded the first shot of half which was saved by
Lolo Retsky the next four came off the foot of Betti. SSU continued to push forward and in the 85
th minute they finally broke through. Several passes moved the ball upfield and
Mia Solorio-Smith played it out wide to
Grace Ingalls. Ingalls then whipped a cross into the box where Betti headed it home for the equalizer for her second goal of the season.
Betti set a new career high with eight shots, three of which were on target and the lone SSU goal. Retsky made four saves in net while Ingalls recorded her second assist of the year.
The Seawolves are back in action on Sunday when they host Cal State Dominguez Hills at 11:30 am for Senior Day. Sonoma State will honor their three seniors;
Ashley Frye,
Cleo Kennedy and
Claudia Janese with a ceremony before the game. Sunday's game will be played at Santa Rosa Junior College and we hope to have a live stream available on the CCAA Network.
