SANTA ROSA, Calif. –
Mia Solorio-Smith's goal in the 68
th minute would prove to be all the Sonoma State women's soccer team would need in a 1-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Senior Day. The Seawolves defense recorded their 5
th shutout of the season while holding a 17-13 shot advantage.
SSU came out strong, putting incredible pressure on the Toros early. The Seawolves hit the post, the crossbar and had a shot cleared off the line in the first five minutes to keep the game tied at 0-0.
Cleo Kennedy was the first to nearly strike, hitting a fantastic shot from 20 yards out that hit off the inside of the post and rolled clear of the net. Thirty seconds later
Renee Ketner's shot from the left side of the box cleared the goalie and hit the crossbar, once again rolling away and giving the Seawolves a corner kick. The third and final chance of the sequence came from
Ashley Frye whose shot off the corner was saved by a Toros defender on the goal line.
CSUDH best chance came in the 42
nd minute on a shot from Alyssa Villalobos targeted for the far post.
Claudia Janese made a fantastic diving save, pushing the ball just wide of the net to keep it scoreless heading into halftime.
The Seawolves offense came out firing in the second half, racking up five shots in the opening 20 minutes. Kylie Yuzon made two saves during that span to keep SSU off the board. That all changed in the 68
th minute when the Seawolves earned a free kick on the left side.
Julia Betti took the kick and played a long ball into the box. The ball bounced inside the 18 and angled towards the back post where Solorio-Smith made an incredible play with her right foot, knocking the shot just under the crossbar. The goal was her second of the season and put SSU ahead for good.
The Sonoma State defense did the rest, holding off the Toros attack to earn the shutout. Janese and
Lolo Retsky combined for the clean sheet, making seven total saves. The Seawolves defense also made two team saves.
SSU will close out their 2023 season on Thursday with a home match against Cal Poly Humboldt. The game will kick-off at 2:00 pm at Sunrise Park in Rohnert Park. Live video will be available on the CCAA Network and live stats through the link at
