Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MBB: Seawolves Hold off Late Penguins Surge to Start Season 2-0, 69-57

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. - On Saturday, November 11th, the Sonoma State men's basketball team held off a late surge from the Dominican Penguins to pick up their second win of the season and conclude the San Francisco State Tip Off Classic with a perfect 2-0 record. Three Seawolves would finish the game in double figures as head coach Rich Shayewitz got another balanced scoring night with seven players recording five points or more.

Junior transfer Andrew Henderson led SSU once again in scoring, finishing with 14 points, 10 of which came in the second half. Henderson had the midrange going all night but was also able to hit a pair of three balls to help extend SSU's lead to as many as 17 points.

Additional transfers Cameron Barry and James Nobles finished with 13 points apiece to finish with a solid weekend. The Seawolves outscored the Penguins bench 27-19 as nine different players found the score sheet.

Sonoma State had everything working in the first half shooting nearly 60% from the field and 40% from three point range. They also held Dominican to just 23 points on 36% shooting. The Penguins featured a zone for large portions of the game and as a result, SSU led the game with 30 points in the paint.

The three ball slowly got the Penguins back in the game, cutting the lead down to seven two different times in the second half. It was too little too late though for Dominican as Sonoma State got some key stops on defense and were able to record seven points in the final two minutes to put the game to bed. Free throws from Nick Medeiros, Julian Bryant and Cameron Barry helped ice the game in the closing seconds. Medeiros would finish with six points and a pair of steals and James Nobles would lead all bench scorers with 13 points.
