SB: Seawolves Sweep Holy Names on Walk-Off Home Run by Romano

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – In their final tune-up before CCAA play starts the Sonoma State softball team swept Holy Names 9-3 and 6-5.  Cassidy Romano hit a 9th inning walk-off homer in the nightcap to move the Seawolves to 6-1 overall on the season.

The first game picked up in the top of the second inning from a halted start that began on February 4th.  Sonoma State opened the game with a four-run first inning back on the 4thAnna Zoia-Buescher led off with a walk and stole second before scoring on a single by Rylee NishimotoGiana Hays then singled and Jordyn Martinez followed with a double to score Nishimoto and make it 2-0.  Hays and Martinez would both later score on wild pitches to finish the first leading 4-0.

Bailee Reed was in control in the circle for SSU, allowing just an earned run through the first three innings.  Reagan Hunt opened the bottom of the second with an inside-the-park home run down the right field line.  The Hawks cut the deficit to two in the fourth, scoring two more unearned with Reed striking out three in the inning.

Lauren Mirtoni singled to start the fourth with Zoia-Buescher walking and Nishimoto recording a single to load the bases.  Hays plated the sixth run of the game with a sacrifice fly to the wall in left field.  The Seawolves added three more runs in the sixth with Skylar Linnane doubling off the wall, Mirtoni scoring one on a groundout and Hunt scoring another on a bunt single.

Charlie Johnson finished off the final two innings for the Seawolves with a pair of scoreless frames in her first appearance on the rubber.  Reed picked up the win with five innings of work and struck out eight to improve to 3-0 on the season.  Eight different Seawolves recorded hits in the game with Hunt, Nishimoto and Martinez picking up two apiece.

Sonoma State started quick in the nightcap as well, scoring a run in the 1st and two more in the 2nd.  Zoia-Buescher opened with a single and moved to third on an error.  Nishimoto drove her home with a single of her own.  Hunt and Romano started the second by both reaching base on errors to put runners on second and third.  Taylor Rapp would then plate Hunt on a groundball in her first career at bat to pick up the RBI.  Romano later scored on a wild pitch to 3-0.

Holy Names got a run back in the fourth off SSU starter Nichole Sarra.  Sarra pitching into the fourth without allowing a hit but walked two in the inning before being replaced by Johnson.  The Seawolves made it 4-1 in the 5th on hits by Linnane and Romano and the game headed to the sixth with SSU's pitchers still not allowing a hit.

That all changed in the sixth as the Hawks offense exploded for five hits and four runs to suddenly lead 5-4.  Sonoma State answered back quickly with a walk and steal from Buescher and a single and steal by Nishimoto to put two runners in scoring position.  Courtney Jack tied the contest with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-5 heading into the seventh.

Reed came on in relief for the Seawolves to start the 7th and shutdown the Hawks offense.  She would throw three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and retiring nine of the ten batters she faced.  Offensively, Sonoma State put two runners on in each of the 7th and 8th inning but could not get the winning run across.  In the bottom of the 9th Romano changed all that, belting a one-out solo shot to left field to give the Seawolves their third walk-off win in seven games.
Romano finished the game 4 for 4 with Hays and Nishimoto added three hits apiece.  The Seawolves recorded 15 hits as a team with eight different players recording at least one.
