ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Friday, February 17th, the Sonoma State baseball team will play in their final non-conference series against PacWest member Fresno Pacific before kicking off CCAA action next week at Cal Poly Pomona. The Seawolves just suffered their first loss of the 2023 season at Holy Names, surrendering a 4-run 4th inning leading to the team's 5-8 defeat.
So far this season, the Seawolves have seen solid production from some new faces combined with timely hitting and the long ball, contributing to their 3-1 start. Freshman infielder
Shane Callison and junior center fielder
Kenny Decelle have led the way at the plate, each playing in all four games and holding a .350+ batting average in their first seasons with the program.
Second year returner
Christopher Wright has also gotten off to a solid start offensively, starting 6-for-15 from the dish and belting two homers to give him a 1.000+ OPS and a .400 average. Wright led off the Seawolves last game against Holy Names with a 2-out shot to give him his second of the season. Wright will look to continue his hot start and lead the Seawolves as he anchors the first base position.
On the mound, SSU has had their strugglers to start but they bring a deep starting rotation to the table that will surely grow and improve as the season goes on. Junior right hander
Tanner Fonoti returned for his second season with the program and leads all pitchers with two starts on the season. He owns a 1-0 record and a 1.29 ERA, also leading the team with five strikeouts. Fellow right hander and sophomore
Blake Janowicz got his first start of the season last week against Holy Names and went a solid four innings, giving up no runs on just two hits to keep his ERA at zero.
Michael Benz,
Ross Goldschlag, and first year player
Michael Panichi have all made solid contributions out of the pen, combing for six innings of a work, one save, and a zero ERA.
Sonoma State will take on Fresno Pacific on Friday at 2:00 PM. Media links can be found below and you can stream the game LIVE on the CCAA Network.
