ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team picked up a big CCAA victory on Thursday night, defeating Cal Poly Pomona 69-62. The teams traded leads ten times in the second half with SSU pulling ahead in the final minutes. The Seawolves completed the season sweep over the Broncos and moved into a tie for fifth place in the conference at 11-8.
The story of the game early on was the Sonoma State defense as they forced CPP into ten straight misses to start the game. Meanwhile, offensively
Cielo Gonzalez and
Alli McDonald both knocked down early 3-pointers to cap off an 8-0 as the Seawolves led 8-2. SSU extended the lead to as many as ten in the first before the Broncos made their first field goal with 52 seconds remaining in the quarter
Gonzalez opened the second with another triple and
Camille Johnson made it a 12-point game with a free-throw before the Broncos started chipping away. The visitors would hit six of seven shots during a run in the second that brought them within four points at halftime.
Gonzalez, McDonald and Luckett all scored early in the third to put Sonoma State back ahead by 33-25 but once again CPP would not go away. The Broncos scored the next ten points to take their first lead since the opening minute at 35-33. Luckett gave the lead back to the Seawolves three separate times before both teams caught fire from long range to end the quarter.
Taylor Johnson made a 3-pointer for SSU that was answered on the next possession by Ally Bates. McDonald then made a three of her own before the Broncos closed the third on a buzzer beater by Sydney Fedinic sent the game to fourth with the Seawolves leading 49-47.
The fourth opened with another 3-pointer by the Broncos who grabbed the lead back before SSU regained it on a layup by McDonald. CPP took their final lead at 53-52 but McDonald sank a pair of free-throws to put the Seawolves back up for good. Gonzalez and
Kianna Maldia both made key baskets to keep the lead and
Camille Johnson would hit six free-throws and a jumper to ice the game in the closing minutes.
Gonzalez finished with a game high 17 points, hitting three 3-pointers and adding four assists and two steals. McDonald finished just behind her with 16 points and five rounds while Luckett tacked on 14 points and eight boards.
Camille Johnson also reached double figures with ten, seven of which came in the fourth quarter.
The Seawolves will close out their home schedule on Saturday afternoon with a contest against Cal State San Bernardino at 1:00 pm. The game will be Senior Day as the program will honor their five seniors:
